First Win Over Rivals in 7 Seasons

Soccer

After a tough 3-2 loss to Conneaut on Saturday and a 6-3 loss to Kirtland on Tuesday, the Huskies returned to the win column with a 4-1 victory over Conneaut on Thursday at Cardinal. Micah Breyley scored 2 goals and Brandon Wicks and Ian Mast scored one each to lead the Huskies. Brandon Wicks, John Canterbury, and Emma Ross had assists. The Huskies are now 6-2 on the season, matching the most wins in the programs history.

The soccer team will be hosting Beachwood on Tuesday and Grand Valley on Thursday. Of special note, Thursday’s game against Grand Valley will be played under the lights at Richard A. Moss field.

Cross Country

The boys and girls Cross Country teams competed in the heat at Newbury with Grand Valley on Tuesday. The girls employed a pack strategy to run to victory with the top five girls finishing in the top 10. Emily Kruse led the way followed closely by Anna Futty. The boys lost a close race to Grand Valley losing by just five points. Brandon Neikirk took 2nd overall followed by Josh Minnick in 4th and Christian Norieka in 6th.

Both teams run this weekend at the Boardman Invitational.

Next Saturday, September 21, is the date of the 15th Annual Cardinal Invitational. Over a dozen area high school and middle school teams will be running at Cardinal.

Volleyball

The Volleyball team had a good week, beating arch rival Berkshire on Tuesday in 3 sets. This was Cardinal’s first win over Berkshire in 7 seasons. Kaitlin Bean led the Huskies with 7 kills, 4 serving aces, 14 points, and 5 digs. Alyssa Shirkey added to the attack with 7 kills, while Caitlyn Lechene and Haley both came up with 5 kills and 2 blocks each. Tia had 4 kills and 3 blocks to help deny the Badgers a win. Maddie Bean kept the offense running with 25 setting assists and even added 5 of her own kills to the Huskie lineup. The back row played well with Becca Klein and Kayla Neikirk digging up 4 attacks each.

Congratulations to the Varsity Volleyball team for sweeping Kirtland last night in Conference competition. They continue to be undefeated in the CVC and have improved their overall record to 8-5. The Bean sisters led the Huskies last night. Kaitlin had 11 kills, 2 blocks and 10 digs while Maddie was 73 for 75 setting with 28 assists, 5 digs, was perfect on 18 serves, 3 aces, leading scorer with 10 points and 3 blocks. Alyssa Shirkey chimed in with 9 kills, 9 service points and 7 digs. Caitlyn Lechene wasn’t quiet either with 7 kills, 3 blocks, 2 aces and 6 points. Hayley Adams denied the Hornets with 4 blocks at the net while Jordyn Shulz picked up 3 blocks and Kayli Staric added 2 blocks of her own. Let’s not forget about the dynamic duo in the back row. Becca Klein had 12 digs and Kayla Neikirk had 7 digs. The Huskies will continue their hunt for a conference title next Tuesday against Fairport.

The JV Volleyball team will travel to Lutheran West Saturday morning.

Football

The football team evened its record at 1-1 with a 36-20 win at Pymatuning Valley. The Huskies travel to Ledgemont this weekend and to Beachwood next weekend.
