Geauga County Public Library (GCPL) is pleased to introduce a new SMS notification service that allows patrons to receive text messages alerting them:
- When items on hold are available for pickup
- Courtesy notices three days prior to due dates
- Overdue notices
Communicating quickly and in convenient ways with patrons is a constant goal of GCPL, and this texting service is yet another way that patrons now may keep tabs on their library items. To receive texts, it is necessary for patrons to log into their accounts and sign up; the library will not send texts to anyone who has not opted in.
Text alerts are free, but standard carrier message charges may apply. For example, if your contract specifies that you pay for text messages, you will be charged for GCPL SMS notices. If your contract includes texting, then these messages are already included in your carrier package.
Phone numbers may be used to receive texts for several library cards. This means that families with several card holders may direct SMS alerts to one phone.
“Text messaging is a popular method for sharing quick messages, and GCPL is happy to be able to offer this service to our cell-phone using patrons,” says Deborah F. O’Connor, Geauga County Public Library Director. “Getting quick SMS notifications often will allow our library users to save time and possibly avoid overdue charges. I can imagine patrons receiving text messages while away from home and avoiding an extra trip to retrieve library books and other materials. We are pleased to roll out this service.”
To opt in to SMS, patrons must log into their accounts at GeaugaLibrary.net and follow the prompts to initiate alerts. If users need help logging in or setting up their SMS service, they should contact their GCPL location for assistance. Users may opt out at any time by sending a message with any of the following words: “Stop,” “End,” “Quit,” “Cancel” or “Unsubscribe” to 35143 from their mobile phone. Should patrons’ phone numbers change, they will need to opt into the service again.
SMS notification is a subscription service. GCPL will send texts when patrons have new items to pick up, items that are due within three days or when items are overdue. The number of messages patrons will receive depends upon how many items they are borrowing.
This service is free to GCPL patrons. However, standard carrier message charges apply.
