Dr. John L. West, Trustee Professor of Chemistry, joined Kent State University in 1984 as a senior research fellow of the Liquid Crystal Institute. The Liquid Crystal Institute (LCI) founded in 1965 by Kent State University chemistry professor, Glenn H. Brown, is the birthplace of liquid crystal displays. LCI is the world’s first research center focused on the basic and applied science of liquid crystals.

As an industry Liquid Crystals have fundamentally changed our modern life and how we engage with one another. Learn about what has been and where it is going as the field of liquid crystals makes a quantum leap beyond information displays into the advanced photonics, sensors, bio- and medical molecular devices, and smart materials for new energy applications.
