The Geauga Growth Partnership announces a November 14th Open House for Geauga County juniors and seniors and their parents to learn about the 2014 program of paid summer internships. The event will be held at the Kent State University Geauga Campus, starting at 6:00 p.m. and is open to any in-school or home-schooled junior or senior who is a Geauga County resident.
“We are delighted to offer these internship opportunities to Geauga students,” said Lee Imhof, chair of the Partnership’s Internship Task Force, “and we encourage all interested students and their parents to attend the November 14th Open House. These internships give our students real-world experience in the workplace and insight into employment opportunities in Geauga County. I especially want to thank the employers who have signed up to offer positions. We encourage more Geauga County employers to contact us about offering internship positions.”
“We also appreciate the cooperation of our high school guidance counselors in getting the word out to juniors and seniors,” Imhof added.
Interns are selected in a competitive process that begins with applications that are due January 31, 2014. Application forms and explanatory information are available from high school guidance counselors or from the GGP website. In addition to the application forms and supplemental information, interns will be interviewed by sponsoring employers.
In 2012 and 2013, interns worked in many different manufacturing and office environments with a wide variety of Geauga County employers. For 2014, the preliminary list of employers includes: Great Lakes Cheese (Troy), Arms Trucking Co. (Claridon), Company 119 (Chardon), Etna Products (Bainbridge), Geauga County (Chardon), Fairmount Minerals (Chesterland), Ohio Valley Group (Bainbridge), Sheoga Hardwood Flooring (Middlefield), Troy Chemical Industries (Troy), United Way of Geauga County (Chardon), and Universal Disposal (Hambden).

As will be explained further at the November 14th Open House, in addition to the workplace experience of their internship, each student is expected to attend workshops that focus on job opportunities and requirements of different County employers and on the expectations for workplace ethics and behavior. In 2013, these workshops were held at the Geauga County Safety Center, Kinetico, and UH Geauga Medical Center.
“We are enthusiastic about the experience of Geauga County employers and students with the internships during the past two summers,” said GGP Chairman John Epprecht (Great Lakes Cheese Co.). “We are delighted that so many employers have already stepped forward to sponsor opportunities for next summer. These internships will help Geauga County build the workforce it needs to keep our economy growing and our communities strong.”
