Geauga Park District Quarterly Calendar: August 2018 Events

  • Kelso Katydid Canoe (Ages 10+ w/adult) – Wednesday, August 22nd, 7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Burton Wetlands Nature Preserve

Take a relaxing mid-week float on Lake Kelso, learn about the musicians of the insect orchestra, and enjoy their concert as the sun sets. Basic canoe experience required. Ages 10+ with adult; must be 12+ to paddle. No private boats, please. Registration begins August 15. NATURE’S NOT TO BE MISSED.

  • Maple Town Tune Traders – Thursday, August 23rd, 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. at The West Woods, Nature Center

Format for singers and musicians combines short performance spots followed by a jam sessions. All musical genres, instruments and musicianship levels welcome. Come to play, sing or simply enjoy as audience. Snacks to share welcome. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

  • Asteroid Sampling Missions – Friday, August 24th, 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Observatory Park, Robert McCullough Science Center

  • Nature Break: Women’s Retreat – Saturday, August 25th, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Bass Lake Preserve, Lodge – Fee: $6

Take a break and relax in the park. We’re offering kayaking, yoga and a Nature-related activity. Bring a mat or beach towel for yoga and a change of clothes in case you get wet from kayaking, and dress in layers with comfortable clothes for both being outside and also for yoga. Partially wheelchair/stroller accessible. Registration required online or at 440-279-0880.

  • Nassau Night Sky Viewing – Saturday, August 25th, 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. at Observatory Park, Nassau Astronomical Station

Observe the wonders of the night sky using this facility’s giant research-grade telescope! If weather conditions prevent sky viewing, join us for a planetarium presentation in the McCullough Science Center instead. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

  • Nights Out in the Parks: Upriver – Saturday, August 25, 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at Big Creek Park, Amphitheater

Enjoy folk, Celtic and Appalachian music with the theme of staying connected to our roots and to the rhythm of Nature in the face of modern day distractions. Refreshments served. Indoors if inclement weather. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

  • Ansel’s Cave Hike: History Written in Rock – Sunday, August 26th, 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. at The West Woods, Turkey Ridge Shelter

Hike two miles with a naturalist to Ansel’s Cave to discover its history written in rock – a rare opportunity to go into this restricted area! Held rain or shine. Registration required.

  • The Sky Tonight Planetarium Show – Sunday, August 26th, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Observatory Park, Robert McCullough Science Center

  • Kayak Fishing at Bass Lake – Sunday, August 26th, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Bass Lake Preserve

Bring your fishing rod and tackle and discover how fun kayak fishing can be on beautiful Bass Lake! Bring your own kayak or borrow one of ours. A current Ohio fishing license will be required to fish. Registration required.

  • The Full Sturgeon Moon – Sunday, August 26th, 8:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. at Observatory Park, Robert McCullough Science Center

August’s full moon is known as the Sturgeon Moon, since it was once the season to harvest the Great Lakes’ sturgeon. Learn about these amazing, ancient fish, then watch the full moon rise over Observatory Park. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

  • Geauga Walkers (For active seniors) – Tuesday, August 28th, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. at Swine Creek Reservation, Valley Shelter

Join other active seniors on weekly hikes of 1-1 ½ miles long in Geauga County and the surrounding area. A naturalist leads hikes scheduled in Geauga Park District parks. Call Geauga Senior Center for full schedule, 440-279-2137. Held year round.

  • The Great Geauga County Fair – Thursday, August 30th – Monday, September 3rd, 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Geauga County Fairgrounds, Natural Resources Area

Visit our building to meet the Monarch Butterfly and learn what’s new with Geauga Park District! Daily live Monarch tagging at 1:30 p.m. as butterflies are available. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.
