Our Senior Days have been re-branded as “Elderberries: Seniors Ripe for Adventure!” In this installment: join us for a look back at whopping winter weather events of the past with an illustrated presentation intended to touch off a blizzard of audience memories. Timbertots: Big Birds! (Ages 3-5 w/adult)

Great Backyard Bird Count

Friday, February 16th from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. – The West Woods, Nature Center

Become an official Citizen Scientist and participate in this worldwide bird count coordinated by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society. During these hours, stop by to help compile a list of birds seen at the big windows! Also February 17th & 18th. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

Wildlife watchers and Nature lovers share observations seen from a bird’s eye view high up in the treetops. Bring your stories or come listen to the tales. Photos or short videos on a flash drive may help illustrate your story. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

Nassau Night Sky Viewing

Saturday, February 17th from 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. – Observatory Park, Nassau Astronomical Station

Join members of the Chagrin Valley Astronomical Society to take in the wonders of the night sky using our newly restored telescope! Stop in to discover this amazing new facility and all it has to offer. Partially wheelchair/stroller accessible.

Travelogue: Wandering Ohio – A Buckeye Trail Thru-Hike

Sunday, February 18th from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. – The West Woods, Nature Center

In 2016, Chuck and Beth Hewett completed a 1,400-mile, 76-day hike on the Buckeye Trail, the longest loop trail in the nation. Join them as they share their journey with pictures and stories about history, Nature and all the wonderful people they met along the way. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

eBird: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know

Sunday, February 18th from 3:30 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. – The West Woods, Nature Center

In conjunction with the Great Backyard Bird Count, join Naturalist Linda Gilbert and Audubon member Matt Valencic for a primer on how to use the eBird app and database. Learn how to set up an account and enter a bird list (we’ll demonstrate with the Backyard Bird Count list), then see what kinds of other cool things you can do with it to enhance your birding experience. At the same time, you’ll be contributing useful data for scientific research! Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

X-treme Winter Fun Day (Ages 12-17)

Monday, February 19th from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. – Orchard Hills Park

Spend the afternoon of your school day off having an “X-treme” amount of winter fun outside with friends. Try snowshoes, bring your sled for a fun downhill ride, learn about winter wildlife, and warm up by a fire with free hot cocoa and s’mores. Outdoors, so please dress for the weather. This is a drop-off program and all participants must have a signed waiver. Not wheelchair/stroller accessible. Registration required.

Maple Town Tune Traders

Thursday, February 22nd from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. – The West Woods, Nature Center

Singers and musicians, sign up for a short performance spot followed by a jam session. All musical genres, instruments and musicianship levels welcome. Come to play, sing or simply enjoy as audience. Snacks to share welcome. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

Sap Bucket Painting Workshop

Friday, February 23rd from 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. – The West Woods, Nature Center – Fee: $35

Join artist Robert Kolcum to paint a beautiful woodland sugaring scene on a sap bucket. Wine and cheese served. Fee: $35 per person includes all materials and refreshments. Ages 21+. Dress for mess and bring an old shirt/smock. Wheelchair/stroller accessible. Registration required.

Nature Explorers: All About Birds (Ages 6-7 & 8-11)

Saturday, February 24th from 12:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. – Swine Creek Reservation, Lodge

Explorers view mist netting and bird banding, play bird games and head outdoors in search of  birds and bird evidence. Indoors and out, so please dress for the weather. Children should be dropped off by 12:30 p.m. and picked up by 2:30 p.m. at the lodge. Signed waivers required. Partially wheelchair/stroller accessible. Registration required.

Winter Tree ID Hike

Saturday, February 24th from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. – B Benner Metzenbaum Park

Discover the diversity of trees at Metzenbaum Park and learn to identify trees by their bark and buds. Hike will be approximately a mile over hilly terrain. Be prepared for variable winter weather. Not wheelchair/stroller accessible. Registration required.

Bring In Your Telescope

Saturday, February 24th from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. – Observatory Park

Have a telescope, but feel unsure about how to use it? Drop in this afternoon for some practice setting up and using your telescope – and stick around for night sky viewing if you’d like! Wheelchair/stroller accessible.
