Find your adventure in Geauga Park District this summer – from a flea market to beating the bushes in search of bugs to goat yoga!

Here are our offerings for July, 2019. You may also view these programs and events published on our new website, www.geaugaparkdistrict.org, beginning the morning of June 20th, and in our quarterly Park Explorer newsletter, which will be mailed before July to every Geauga County household and available from all in-county libraries.

X-TREME Days: Wilderness Skills Challenge (Teens entering grades 8-10) –Monday, July 1st from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Big Creek Park, Meyer Center – Fee: $30

Learn backcountry off-trail navigation skills and get a taste for wilderness travel! Please wear footwear appropriate for an “X-treme” hike and be prepared to cross several creeks. Bring a lunch and a water bottle. Complete list sent upon registration. Drop-off program. Financial assistance available; call for details. Registration required.

X-TREME Days: Kayak River Challenge (Teens entering grades 8-10) –Tuesday, July 2nd from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Eldon Russell Park – Fee: $30

Join naturalist staff on this 10-mile “X-treme” adventure as we paddle the Nature-rich Upper Cuyahoga River, discovering plants and wildlife. Bring a lunch and water bottle in a waterproof bag. Complete list sent upon registration. Drop off at 9 AM at Eldon Russell Park and pick up at 4 PM at Camp Hi Canoe Livery, 12274 Abbott Road, Hiram. Financial assistance available; call for details. Registration required.

Geauga Walkers –Tuesday, July 2nd from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. at The West Woods, Affelder House

Hikes for active seniors 1 to 1 ½ miles long. Naturalist led. Call Geauga Senior Center for full schedule at 440-279-2126.

X-TREME Days: Natural Science Challenge (Teens entering grades 8-10) – Wednesday, July 3rd from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at The Rookery – Fee: $30

Conduct natural resource projects using scientific tools with Park Biologist Paul Pira and Naturalist Dottie Drockton. Outdoors and off-trail on rough terrain with stream crossings, so dress appropriately. Bring a lunch, water bottle and raincoat in a backpack. Complete list sent upon registration. Drop-off program. X-TREME Days: High Ropes Adventure Challenge (Teens entering grades 8-10) – Friday, July 5th from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Claridon Woodlands – Fee: $30

Let’s meet at Claridon Woodlands to explore the popular high ropes course, more than 30 feet in the air with 10 exciting challenge elements! Bring a lunch, water bottle and raincoat in a backpack. Complete list sent upon registration. Drop-off program. Financial assistance available; call for details. Registration required.

Russell Uplands Preserve Discovery Hike – Saturday, July 6th from 9:00 a.m. -10:30 a.m. at Russell Uplands Preserve

Hike with a naturalist 1.5 miles over hilly terrain along these forested trails, discovering the wonders of our natural world. Parking limited; carpooling recommended. Held rain or shine. Registration required.

High Rise Homes: Osprey Van Tour – Saturday, July 6th from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at The West Woods

Osprey have made an astounding comeback in Ohio and can be seen plunging for fish on Geauga’s lakes. Join us for this tour of local osprey nests atop cell towers.Registration required. Nature’s Not to Be Missed.

Polliwog Paddle Family Canoe (Ages 5+ w/adult) – Saturday, July 6th from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Eldon Russell Park

Enjoy an easy-paced, short-distance canoe float on the wildlife-rich Upper Cuyahoga River. Registration by phone begins June 30. Registration required.

Nights Out in the Parks: Foster Brown & Friends – Saturday, July 6th from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at Claridon Woodlands

Naturalist and award-winning songwriter Foster Brown will share his lyrical lessons and musical talents during this high-energy, audience-participatory concert filled with upbeat acoustic music and featuring some of his musician friends. Memorable melodies and a family fun atmosphere. Bring lawn chairs and/or blankets for seating in the grass. Refreshments served. Held inside if inclement weather. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

Burgers & Butterflies, Dogs & Dragons – Sunday, July 7th from Noon- 3:30 p.m. at Swine Creek Reservation, Lake Side Picnic Shelter

Earn a free lunch as you participate in this annual butterfly and dragonfly survey. Use nets (provided) to capture specimens of butterflies and dragonflies, which will be identified by experts and counted as official data! Nature’s Not to Be Missed.

Nature Exploration Kayak (Ages 12 + w/adult) – Sunday, July 7th from 3:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. at Bass Lake Preserve

Discover an amazing diversity of plants and animals during a leisurely afternoon kayak. Bring your own kayak or borrow one of ours! Previous kayaking experience recommended. Bring a snack, water and sunscreen. Registration begins July 1. Registration required.

Adventure Day Camp (Youth entering grades 5-7) – Monday, July 8th – Friday, July 12th from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at The West Woods – Fee: $150

Are you ready for an adventure!? If so, sign up now for an exciting week that includes exploring, hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, sending rockets high into the sky and more! Participants begin and end each day at The West Woods Nature Center. Transportation provided to other parks for various activities facilitated by highly qualified staff. Schedules, waivers and other details sent upon registration. Waiver required for each participant. Bring lunch, water and a raincoat in a backpack each day. Other equipment provided by the registration fee. Financial assistance available; call for details. Registration required.

Nature Explorers: Forest Floor Litter Critters – Ages 6-7: Monday, July 8th from 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and Ages 8-11: Tuesday, July 9th from 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Sunnybrook Preserve

Nature Explorers, venture into a forest to discover tiny critters in the leaf litter such as pill bugs, millipedes and beetles. Outdoors, so dress accordingly and wear shoes/boots for wading in a rocky stream; no sandals. Drop-off program. Registration required.

West Woods Wednesdays Farm Market – Wednesday, July 10th from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at The West Woods

Purchase locally made/grown items at The West Woods the second Wednesday of each month this summer, July through September! A food truck on site will also serve dinner/snacks for purchase. Live music by Rebecca Wohlever. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

Scout Day at Claridon Woodlands Ropes Course – Thursday, July 11th from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. – Noon, Noon – 1:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Claridon Woodlands

Scouts, experience the ropes course at Claridon Woodlands! Four one-hour sessions are available for scouts ages 10-17 who are at least 54 inches and 50-250 pounds. Groups of eight go at once. All participants must bring the waiver signed by a parent, found at www.geaugaparkdistrict.org/park/claridon-woodlands. Register online for your desired time slot. Walk-ins only allowed if space available. Registration required.

Toddler Time: Sensing the Summer (Ages 1-2 w/adult) – Thursday, July 11th from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Beartown Lakes Reservation

Enjoy experiencing nature with your little one as we see, smell and touch summertime in the park. Strollers and carriers welcome! Wheelchair/stroller accessible. Registration required.

Grandparents Summer Picnic – Friday, July 12th from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Holbrook Hollows

Grandparents and grandchildren, enjoy a day in the park with summertime activities, Nature fun and a picnic in collaboration with Chardon Senior Center, which provides hot dogs. Please bring a dessert or side dish to share. Wheelchair/stroller accessible. Registration required.

Apollo to the Moon – Friday, July 12th 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at Observatory Park

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing this month, join us for an indoor presentation on the fascinating history of this audacious undertaking. Followed by night-sky viewing using park telescopes until 11 PM, weather permitting. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

Treasures Among the Trees Flea Market – Saturday, July 13th from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at The West Woods

Join Geauga Ohio Horseman’s Council for an annual favorite to peruse dozens of vendors selling treasures of all kinds! A portion of the proceeds from this event benefits Geauga Park District’s Bridle Trail Fund. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

Thompson Ledges: Geauga’s Geologic Gem – Saturday, July 13th from 2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. at Thompson Ledges Township Park

Explore the magnificent Thompson Ledges, where north meets south with oak and hemlock forests and unique plant and bird life. Be prepared for rocky uneven terrain. Wear sturdy footwear. Registration required.

Nassau Night Sky Viewing – Saturday, July 13th from 9:00 p.m. – Midnight at Observatory Park, Nassau Astronomical Station

Observe the wonders of the night sky using this facility’s giant research-grade telescope! If weather prevents sky viewing, join us for a planetarium presentation in the McCullough Science Center instead. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

Hidden Gems Back Country Stream Hike – Sunday, July 14th from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at The West Woods

Discover rainbow darters, dusky salamanders, crayfish and other amazing wildlife found in Silver Creek on this rugged, off-trail backcountry adventure. Dress for weather and wear hip waders or pants to protect legs and shoes that may get wet/muddy. Bring a water bottle. Registration required.

The Sky Tonight Planetarium Show – Sunday, July 14th from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Observatory Park

Join us for a planetarium presentation about what to watch for in the night sky this week. Building open house 1-4 PM. Weather permitting, also view the sun using our safe solar-viewing equipment. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

Nature Explorers: Dragon Hunters – Ages 6-7: Monday, July 15th from 10:00 a.m. – Noon and Ages 8-11: Tuesday, July 16th from 10:00 a.m. – Noon at Swine Creek Reservation, Lodge

Come on a quest for dragonflies and damselflies! Capture and examine these amazing insects: look into their multi-image eyes, marvel at their colors, and learn about their submarine-to-helicopter lifestyle. Optional: bring a camera! Drop-off program. Registration required.
