Geauga Park District Quarterly Events Calendar for February 2020

  • Scout Day: Boy Scout Bird Study Merit Badge – Saturday, February 15th from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at The West Woods – Work toward the Bird Study Merit Badge requirements 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (start), 6 (partial) & 7 as part of the Annual Backyard Bird Count. We’ll review birding basics, including binoculars, field guides and bird ID. Bring your own Bird Study Merit Badge Worksheets and Blue Cards. A merit badge counselor will be on site to sign requirements. To complete the badge, you must employ the skills learned at the program and complete a bird study on your own afterwards, then you may call the counselor to finish the badge. Registration required by phone only at 440-279-0880. To maximize attendance and minimize no-shows, there is a limit of 4 registrations per person.
  • Great Backyard Bird Count: The West Woods – Saturday, February 15th from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at The West Woods, Nature Center – Stop by the nature center anytime during listed hours to identify and count birds seen at the big windows, becoming an official Citizen Scientist during this worldwide bird count coordinated by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.
  • Nassau Astronomy Night with CVAS – Saturday, February 15th from 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. at Nassau Astronomical Station – Join members of the Chagrin Valley Astronomical Society to take in the wonders of the night sky using our amazing 36-inch-mirrored telescope! Stop in to discover this amazing facility and all it has to offer. Cancelled if cloudy. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

  • Travelogue: Return to Guyana – Sunday, February 16th from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at The West Woods – Join photographers and travelers Bruce and Susan Bennett on their travels through Guyana, which was voted the world’s best ecotourism destination by The Green Destinations Foundation. This trip includes exploration on horseback in southern Guyana as well as a return visit to The Rewa Eco Lodge for fishing and wildlife photography. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.
  • Geauga Walkers – Tuesday, February 18th from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. at Eldon Russell Park – Hikes for active seniors 1 to 1 ½ miles long. Naturalist led. If temperatures below 20 degrees, call the park to see if hike will still being held. Call Geauga Senior Center for full schedule, 440-279-2126. Also, February 4th.
  • Elderberries: Maple Syrup 101 – Thursday, February 20th from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. at The West Woods – There may still be snow on the ground, but it’s a busy time for Geauga maple producers! This indoor program will highlight the basics of producing syrup with demonstrations and tasty samples, including maple nut sundaes! A collaboration with Geauga Department on Aging and University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center. Registration required. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.
  • Timbertots: Wonderful Woodpeckers (Ages 3-5 w/adult) – Friday, February 21st from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. & 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Big Creek Park, Meyer Center – Join Nora the Explorer indoors and out to discover all the wonderful things about woodpeckers! Registration required.
  • Whatever-the-Weather Venture – Friday, February 21st from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at The Rookery, Great Blue Heron Lodge Shelter – It may be a bit optimistic, but we’ll hoping for snow for this one. If conditions are just right for snowshoeing, that’s what we’ll do. If not, we’ll take a cold-weather hike. Whatever the weather, let’s get outside! Borrow a pair of our snowshoes or bring your own. Ages 8+. Registration required.
  • Pluto (and Friends) – Friday, February 21st from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Observatory Park – When is a planet not a planet? Join us to celebrate Pluto’s 90th birthday! Followed by night-sky viewing until 11 PM, if weather conditions permit. Also, February 7th. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.
  • Timbertots: Wonderful Woodpeckers (Ages 3-5 w/adult) – Saturday, February 22nd from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Sunnybrook Preserve – Join Nora the Explorer indoors and out to discover all the wonderful things about woodpeckers! Registration required.
  • Winter Tree ID Hike – Saturday, February 22nd from 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. at Sunnybrook Preserve, Lodge – Discover the diversity of trees at Sunnybrook Preserve and learn to identify them by their bark and buds. Hike approximately 1.5 miles over hilly terrain. Participants should be prepared for the variable winter weather. Registration required.
  • Nassau Night Sky Viewing – Saturday, February 22nd from 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. at Nassau Astronomical Station – Observe the wonders of the night sky using this facility’s giant research-grade telescope! If weather prevents sky viewing, join us for a planetarium presentation in the McCullough Science Center instead. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.
  • The Sky Tonight Planetarium Show – Sunday, February 23rd from 2:00 p.m. -3:00 p.m. at Observatory Park – Join us for a planetarium presentation about what to watch for in the night sky this week. Building open house 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Also view the sun using our safe solar-viewing equipment, weather permitting. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.
  • Travelogue: Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Adventure – Sunday, February 23rd from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at The West Woods – Join Shane Wohlken and John Kolar on a photo journey along the crystal-clear waters and rugged shoreline of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula! Visit Grand Island, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Isle Royale National Park. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.
  • Maple Town Tune Traders – Thursday, February 27th from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. at The West Woods – Come to play, sing or simply enjoy as audience. Musicians of all levels, genres and instruments are welcome. Short performances followed by sharing of songs and tunes in the round. Snacks to share welcome. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.
  • The Rookery Through the Seasons Hike: Winter – Saturday, February 29th from 10:00 a.m. -11:30 a.m. at The Rookery – From winter weed and tree ID to spring wildflowers, summer wetland flora to colorful fall colors and berries, discover the changing flora in this series of easy walks along the Interurban Trail. Attend any or all hikes as your time allows. In collaboration with the Native Plant Society of Northeastern Ohio.
