Geauga Park District Spring “Elderberries” Program Features Lots to do Outdoors

Geauga Park District is pleased to unveil its spring repertoire for Elderberries: Seniors Ripe for Adventure!, featuring wildflowers, songbirds and exploration of the brand new Claridon Woodlands!

Registration is required at 440-286-9516 or Geauga Park District for Elderberries programming, all co-presented by Geauga Park District, the Geauga Department on Aging and University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center, and partially wheelchair accessible depending on your choice activities.

Wild About Wildflowers – Thursday, April 26th, 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., The Rookery, Great Blue Heron Lodge

Beautiful blossoms pale in the face of other fascinating aspects of spring wildflowers! Enjoy breakfast in the lodge at 9:00 a.m., then take a stroll to reveal secrets of pollination, seed dispersal strategies and wildflower lore and legend.

From Jungles to Geauga, Songbirds of Spring – Thursday, May 17th, 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., Big Creek Park, Aspen Grove Shelter

Enjoy breakfast in the lodge at 9:00 a.m., then look for colorfully plumaged birds from the Tropics of Central and South America. These beauties include orioles, warblers and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. Bring binoculars if you have them, or try a pair of ours.

Seniors at Claridon Woodlands – Thursday, June 21st, 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., Claridon Woodlands, Judge Lester Taylor Lodge

Discover all the exciting features of this brand new park! Enjoy breakfast at 9:00 a.m., then explore the ropes course (and yes, you can go up if you’d like!), hiking trails (on foot or aboard the EZ Go Cart) and wildlife and fishing areas. We’ll even go “finny-dipping,” scooping up life in the ponds!

Did you know that park naturalists also lead Geauga Walkers hikes of active seniors year-round, usually a couple Tuesdays a month from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.? Hikes this season are: April 10th at The West Woods’ Affelder House, April 24th at The Rookery, May 8th at Headwaters Park’s Route 322 Parking Lot, May 22nd at Swine Creek Reservation’s lodge, and June 19th at Frohring Meadows. A Geauga Walkers Summer Picnic will also take place on June 5th, beginning with a hike at 12:00 p.m. followed by a potluck picnic at 1:00 p.m. Please bring a dish to share.

Registration is not required for Geauga Walkers hikes, which are not wheelchair accessible. For the season’s complete Geauga Walkers schedule, please call Geauga Senior Center at 440-279-2137.

And finally, if you love sentimental love songs, consider coming out to the year’s first Nights Out in the Parks concert on Saturday, June 9th, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., where the Erie Heights Brass Ensemble will play some of your favorite “torch songs” in Big Creek Park’s Frances S. Hall Amphitheater under the stars. Admission is free and includes refreshments; the show simply moves indoors in case of inclement weather.
