NATURE’S NOT TO BE MISSED
Get on the call list ASAP – timed opportunities are filling quickly!
Wood Frog males jockeying for position to attract females, charging each other to gain prime spots, produce a sight in which the water seems to boil or bubble with activity.
What are the odds you’ll see this natural phenomenon in real life? With Geauga Park District’s naturalists keeping their eye out for optimal surface-rippling conditions – pretty good, in fact!
Register yourself for our Amphibian Awakening Call List using www.geaugaparkdistrict.org or 440-286-9516 and you, too, could witness the natural phenomenon of spring breeding behavior of Wood Frogs, Spring Peepers and possibly large salamanders as they move into woodland pools on a warm, rainy night sometime in early March through early April.
Please note that the only 45-minute time slots with availability will meet at 10 p.m. All others have filled quickly. Don’t delay in nabbing a remaining spot ASAP!
New this year, registration also includes the opportunity to attend a 45-minute-long virtual program on Thursday, February 11, at 7 p.m., using the free software Zoom. Just register and we will send you the link to join in.
Then, when weather conditions bring amphibians to their breeding pools, naturalists will make the call to host in-person experiences – at which point, registered participants will get a phone call.
Frogs will move early in the evening; salamanders, late evening. Spring Peepers call so loud that their bulging vocal sacs look as though they might burst! The din can actually leave your ears ringing.
Additionally, the timing of darkness and rain must be just right to see a Spotted or Jefferson salamander in the water, so this sight cannot be anticipated…but you never know.
Once you sign up, expect a call in the late afternoon on the day of the program. A flashlight will be required to participate, and remember to dress for the weather. Wetland areas utilized that night will feature boardwalk and paved trails with ADA-OK grades for wheelchairs and strollers.
