Glide Here and There, and In the Full Moon’s Light

Join a skiing naturalist at The West Woods, Orchard Hills Park and Headwaters Park

Three opportunities exist to ski our winter landscape this season – including two beneath beautiful full moons.

Cross Country Skiers

If you have the ability to ski three to four miles, consider joining a naturalist to ski The West Woods on Saturday, January 19, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.; Orchard Hills Park on Saturday, January 26, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.; or Headwaters Park on Sunday, February 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (The latter ski will take place on The Maple Highlands Trail and Buckeye Trail.)

Said Naturalist Dottie Mathiott, who has led full moon skis in the past: “Cross country skiing is an excellent chance to listen for the sounds we miss when we are closed up indoors: calls of Great Horned, Barred, and Screech Owls and maybe even coyotes – and to see the shadows and silhouettes of winter trees on the sparkling snow. Skiing also allows you to glide over instead of break through the snow, so hope for lots of white stuff in time for the full moon!”

All these skis become hikes if there is no snow; call 440-286-9516 after 2 p.m. on program day to check conditions. Ski rental is available in advance from Geiger’s Ski & Sports Haus, 50 Shopping Plaza, Chagrin Falls, 440-247-4900.

Trails are also groomed for your leisurely skiing at Orchard Hills Park and on The Maple Highlands Trail. Check Geauga Park District’s Facebook page for trail condition updates. With questions, call 440-286-9516.

Geauga Park District is online, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
