House Rules

As a mother raising 7 kids I remember trying to put together a list of house rules that would be short enough to memorize yet broad enough to cover the important things, including: maintaining order, teaching self discipline, and treating each other kindly. It could have easily been a list of 20 things, but I narrowed it down to six that I still think, if practiced, can bring clarity, harmony, and order to any home. It will be interesting to see if any of my seven children will use these in their homes with their own kids!

1. WHEN IN THE HOUSE, I WILL BE QUIET AND CALM.

I had six boys and one girl. This was important! They could play in the basement and be loud, but not upstairs!

2. I WILL ALWAYS SAY ‘PLEASE’, ‘THANK YOU’, AND ‘YOU’RE WELCOME’.

When choosing between two candidates for anything, the one with manners will win every time! It is a lost art. Teach it!

3. WHEN I NEED TO INTERRUPT OR DID NOT HEAR, I WILL SAY ‘EXCUSE ME’ ONCE.

Yes – only once! Otherwise you have a broken record and defeat the purpose!

4. WHEN TALKING WITH OTHERS, I WILL LOOK THEM IN THE EYE AND SPEAK CLEARLY.

A confident and attentive listener makes others feel important.

5. I WILL BEHAVE IN SUCH A WAY AS TO MAKE OTHERS FEEL COMFORTABLE.

It is of the utmost importance for children to learn to be aware of others’ needs and get outside of themselves. I can happily report today, after 30 years of being a mom, that all my children have sacrificially served for the good of others, especially those of their own household. There is no greater joy.

6. IF I TAKE IT OUT, PUT IT BACK; OPEN IT, CLOSE IT; TURN IT ON, TURN IT OFF.

HARD to teach!! Some are still in need of help here! But well worth any effort you put into it. It will make spouses and bosses REALLY happy!

Wishing you a happy, harmonious home!
