Some like it hot, some like it cold, some like it black, and some like it with more cream than the cup can hold!
I am always entertained watching how people like to fix their coffee. Sometimes, I feel like it’s a human psychology project. I have seen everything from straight black (which I personally prefer), to those who put so much cream and sugar into it that there really isn’t much room for coffee at all. There is, of course, no right answer, but I do have some reasons behind why I drink it black.
I remember when I was much younger, probably 12-13 years old, I decided that drinking coffee was the “cool” or adult thing to do, so I tried it black. It was bitter, nasty, and not exactly what I expected. So, in order to accomplish my goal of drinking coffee, I added so much cream and sugar that I couldn’t even taste the coffee anymore.
Can you relate? I think many of us may have gotten started on coffee that way.
Over time, I actually started to enjoy the warm bitter taste of coffee. I realized that it actually did have its own distinct flavor, and based on the beans, the grind, the roasting, and the coffee flavors, I found that there were many different ways to enjoy coffee.
At first, I eliminated putting in so much sugar. I eventually stopped using sugar, and just used a sweet French vanilla creamer. Coffee is delicious that way. Not only do you get a little caffeine buzz, but you get a sugar high too! How great is that?
Occasionally, I would drink my coffee black if I was out of creamer or with someone that didn’t use creamer. But it wasn’t that frequently.
Today though, I am a black coffee drinker. Two things have moved me into the black coffee crowd:
1. I realized that the creamer in my coffee on an empty stomach in the morning was what was causing a little bit of an upset stomach more and more frequently.
2. My dentist recommended that I stop drinking all sugary drinks, like pop, juice, and coffee that had a lot of cream and sugar in it.

Now that I have gone to drinking black coffee, I love it. I really get to savor and enjoy each unique flavor and blend, and I have to say, I don’t miss cream and sugar at all. Once in a great while I will have a coffee with extra ingredients in it, but I don’t really care for it like that anymore.
I am happily drinking black.
What about you? Do you like it black? Or do you have a special mixture of cream and or sugar that you like to use?
