IS IT SPRING YET? – Gardening program designed to get you in gear

Have a shovel that needs sharpened? Want to sharpen your knowledge of garden tool maintenance? Let’s get ready for spring!

Mark your calendar to stop by The West Woods Nature Center on Wednesday, March 27, anytime between 1 to 3 p.m. for Bring In Your Garden Tools – no registration required! There, Naturalist Chris Mentrek will lead a session about caring for the tools you brought for maintenance. Be it a dull shovel, dirty clippers, or a damaged trowel, we’ll help you clean, sharpen and spruce-up so you’re ready for the warm-up.

In his program’s third year, Chris remarked that its previous popularity stemmed from folks who own garden tools but not the tools to maintain them.

“Now is a great time for the chores of cleaning, sharpening and maintaining those trusty, rusty garden tools that will see you through this coming spring and summer,” Chris said. “We’ll share some advice on how to clean and sharpen your shears, shovels, clippers and more, plus give you a chance to spruce up your gardening gear with our oil, steel wool and sharpening files – you just supply the elbow grease!”

Fun fact: way back in Chris’ childhood, tuning up Mom and Dad’s garden tools was a standard winter chore for the Mentrek children, making this a program close to Chris’ heart. Naturalists onsite will assist with routine cleaning and sharpening tasks during the program, but arrange for more major repairs (such as replacing a broken handle or missing spring) at a later date with a drop-off and pick-up. The West Woods Nature Center is located at 9465 Kinsman Road (Route 87) in Russell Township.
