Join the Geauga Park District for “A Look Into the Lives of Ohio’s Peregrine Falcons” on May 15

Chad and Chris Saladin served in the 1990s as official Peregrine Falcons nest site monitors for the Ohio Division of Wildlife, then continued their studies after that project ended, once the peregrine population had recovered enough to no longer be considered “threatened,” in 2015.

Now the public is invited to come hear what this couple has learned over so many years of observation – and meet a live peregrine, “Cliff,” an animal ambassador from Lake Metroparks – during A Look Into the Lives of Ohio’s Peregrine Falcons on Tuesday, May 15th, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center.

Blackbrook Audubon Society is proud to co-present this program about these raptors’ unique features, behavior and ecology, which will include many photos the Saladins have taken over the years.

In 2012, the couple created a Facebook page called “C&C’s Ohio Peregrine Page,” where they continue to write about and show photos of local peregrines. They have also been published in “Birder’s World” magazine and other publications; participated in rehabilitation work with peregrines at the Medina Raptor Center, including injured raptor rescues; and hold regular speaking engagements.

The Peregrine Falcon was a major impetus for the passage of the Endangered Species Act of 1973. At that time, the entire eastern North American population had been wiped out, its demise attributed to reproductive failure caused by accumulated levels of DDT and other hydrocarbon pesticides. Through captive breeding programs, peregrines were successfully released into the wild to breed on their own.  And in the years since, this incredible bird, clocked at over 200 mph in stoop dives in pursuit of avian prey, has staged a stunning recovery. Having adapted to big city skyscrapers in place of cliff ledges, Peregrine Falcons now nest in every major city in Ohio!

Continued information and education about this incredible species is key toward this effort, and Chad and Chris seek to utilize their ongoing passion for peregrines to emphasize the shared fascination and extensive value of this remarkable bird of prey.

Registration is not required to attend this program, which will be fully wheelchair/stroller accessible. The West Woods is located at 9465 Kinsman Road (Route 87) in Russell Township. Please call 440-286-9516 with questions.
