The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are.
Checklists are accepted from anywhere in the world – so why not come out to The West Woods and help produce a tally for Geauga County? It’s among our “Connect with Winter” activities, geared toward getting you outside to enjoy and embrace winter weather and fun in Geauga!
All ages are invited to join the count Friday through Monday, February 13 through 16, any time between noon and 4 p.m. for some warm bird watching at The West Woods’ awesome wildlife feeding window.
Attendees will also be able to view results as they come in on our computer and learn from Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalists which types of seeds and feeders are the most successful.
“People who care about birds can change the world,” said Audubon chief scientist Gary Langham. “Technology has made it possible for people everywhere to unite around a shared love of birds and a commitment to protecting them.”
Also on Saturday, February 14, visit The West Woods for Winter Armchair Birding. Between 2 and 3 p.m., you’ll learn which birds are residents and which ones just visit during the winter – as well as how to provide for both kinds. Then, feel free to venture out to the Bird in the Hand feeder along the trail and invite a chickadee to take some seed from your hand!
The West Woods Nature Center is located at 9465 Kinsman Road (Route 87), Russell Township, and is wheelchair/stroller accessible. Call 440-286-9516 with questions, and learn more about the Great Backyard Bird Count at www.birdsource.org/gbbc.
