Three years ago the Beacon of Light group was formed, in an effort to introduce St. Mary junior high students to a variety of service opportunities. The groups’ goal is to provide service
to their school, community, and parish along with one additional global project per year. Past projects have included feeding the homeless, dancing in a flash mob at the Tolerance Fair, and sending shoeboxes of gifts to children in 3rd world countries just to name a few. This year the group has raked leaves for seniors and is planning to cook meals for Project Hope.
The students meet after school to select the service opportunities they are most interested in and plan upcoming events. During these meetings, they are challenged to let their light shine to others in everyday ways as well. Organizer Lisa Baitt challenged the students this month to greet and acknowledge others first, especially adults.
Student member Andrea Diaz-Rodriguez said, “The club is fun and gives us ways to serve. I plan to continue on in service groups when I go to high school.” The Beacon of Light group helps to grow students into service leaders not only in junior high, but throughout their entire lives.
