We may consider landfills to be places barren of life – but we would do so mistakenly.
The Lake County Recycling and Disposal Facility is a 195-acre site used for municipal and commercial waste from 1927 until 1993, when it was closed with a state-of-the-art vegetated cap.
Today it is devoted to enhancing wildlife habitat, increasing biodiversity, and providing educational opportunities. It has even been certified since 2009 as a Wildlife at Work site by the Wildlife Habitat Council.
Would you like to explore these grasslands and wetlands, adjacent to Orchard Hills Park, and see first-hand how it has been naturally reclaimed by an amazing diversity of animals and plants, including bobolinks, bluebirds, rare dragonflies, damselflies and tiger beetles?
