Blackbrook Audubon Society’s Annual Birdathon Fundraiser – May 8 to 16
May 8, 2021 - May 16, 2021
Blackbrook Audubon Society’s annual Birdathon fundraiser will be Saturday, May 8, World Migratory Bird Day, through May 16, the Sunday of Blackbrook’s Big Sit at Headlands. Birders may form teams, count birds and collect donations from sponsors. Choose any 24-hour period between the announced dates and count the highest number of each bird species seen at one time. Birdathon funds are used to purchase Audubon Adventures, a conservation publication for students in third – fifth grade in Lake and Geauga Counties.
Birdathoners can gather donation pledges or ask sponsors to mail their donations directly with a note to say they are sponsoring the birder by May 31, 2021 to Blackbrook Audubon Society, P. O. Box 1306, Mentor, OH 44061-1306.
Blackbrook reminds Birdathoners to also submit their results to eBird.org. A great deal of data exists about bird species at hotspots, but not much is known about the birds who frequent backyard habitats or less-visited sites. The hours logged do not have to be consecutive, so a morning bird walk and evening walk within a 24-hour block “fit the bill.” Blackbrook will use the copies of lists turned in by Birdathoners to post results in categories such as most species recorded, most unusual bird, most common bird, etc.
While birding, participants should maintain at least a Bald Eagle’s wingspan, 6-7 feet, from anyone else, and refrain from sharing binoculars or spotting scopes outside one’s household.
Blackbrook spends $1500 annually to provide Audubon Adventures magazines to about 900 students in the Nature Scopes program at Geauga Park District and at Mentor Marsh.
