Christmas Bird Count

Jan 4, 2014 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 am

bird countingThose who’d like to help tally winter bird life are invited to take part in the annual Christmas Bird Count for the Burton area, from 8 to 10 a.m. at Burton Wetlands Nature Preserve, 15681 Old Rider Road.

Burton’s Christmas Bird Count was started by former Board of Park Commissioners President Robert McCullough in the 1950s. For more on the history on the National Audubon Society’s 114th annual event, visit this website.

This year’s bird list that Chief Naturalist John Kolar and his fellow bird-counters create will be compiled with the lists of all participants counting that day within the Burton circle – that is, a 15-mile diameter circle centered around a point, and in this case Burton is nearest to the point. As per the rules of the Audubon count, the circle cannot overlap with any other circle and attempts to cover a variety of bird habitat.
