Maple Elementary Chess Club Spotlight

Do you know the difference between a rook and a pawn? Maple’s Chess Club members sure do! The after school club was started this school year and is open to students in grades 1-5.

Instruction is provided by Progress with Chess, a local non-profit organization that runs chess programs in area schools and recreation centers. The club invites students of all levels to participate and provides instruction to beginners and advanced players.

The Maple club meets one day a week (on Fridays from 3:30-4:30 p.m.). Sessions last for 8 weeks. The students learn and practice higher level thinking skills such as memory, concentration and pattern recognition in their chess instruction. Special thanks go out to Maple parent, Meredith Gajda, who started, and currently oversees, the program.
