Middlefield Man Given Scholarship to “Extreme Weight Loss”

Many of you have followed the amazing transformation of our home grown Geauga County singer/songwriter Jayce Hein who has lost an incredible 188 pounds in a year’s time. He is living the dream life now in Nashville where is about to release his first album which we will be covering in a series of upcoming stories shortly.

Jayce Hein

In June of this year, Jayce’s Extreme Weight Loss show aired which takes you through his year of transformation. At the close, the ‘loser’ gets to select a person of his choice to become the next ‘winner’ from the audience. This story is about that lucky local recipient adapted from a press release out of Aurora, Colorado.

The television cameras were rolling as Bobby Miller sat in the audience during the taping of the “finale” portion of an episode of the ABC series “Extreme Weight Loss.” This episode featured the 365-day transformation of his childhood buddy, Jayce Hein, who’d lost an amazing 188 pounds. Stunned when he heard his name called out, Miller was selected by Hein to receive a scholarship to the brand new Extreme Weight Loss: Destination Boot Camp at the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center. “Extreme Weight Loss” airs Tuesday nights at 8:00-10:00 p.m. (ET/PT) on the ABC Television Network.

The CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center (AHWC) was home to “Extreme Weight Loss” participants for the first 90 days of their yearlong transformation journey. During the final weigh-in portion of each episode, the participants “pay it forward” and announce to a national TV audience whom they’ve chosen to receive the scholarship.

In his episode, which aired June 17, Hein, a country music singer-songwriter from Nashville, paid it forward to Miller, a stay-at-home dad who still lives in their hometown of Middlefield, Ohio. The two grew up together as “big boys” and graduated from Cardinal High School.

“Jayce and I were bullied a lot,” said Miller. “I was so proud watching him lose all that weight. Now, thanks to him, it’s my turn. Jayce told me that what he learned at the CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center was life-changing.”

Miller currently weighs nearly 300 pounds and dreams about getting down to 185, a weight he hasn’t seen since elementary school. Miller has already taken the first steps toward a new healthy lifestyle by quitting smoking (he was up to three packs a day) and quitting soda pop (he was drinking 13 sugar-packed drinks a day).

“Jayce explained to me that this isn’t about a diet; it’s about changing your life,” said Miller. “I’m grateful to him because I’m ready. I don’t ever want to be here again.”

Bobby, who is now on his way to Anschutz, is stepping up to the “scale” to take the weight off and change his life once and for all mostly for his daughter who is following in his footsteps of bad habits. How often do we hear of parents taking accountability for their kids’ bad habits? AND be willing to change because of it? Not often.

The above after photo of Bobby is not from photoshop, but created by the folks at the AHWC and represents a true gauge of current and goal weights. Bobby’s reaction upon seeing the “future” was, “I look weird,” not having seen himself that size in so long!

Miller’s scholarship is to Phase 1 of Extreme Weight Loss: Destination Boot Camp, a six-day transformation program that will be held in October at the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center in Aurora, CO., just east of Denver.

Boot Camp participants like Bobby Miller will be assigned a transformation coach for daily sessions of physical activity, self-discovery exercises, and nutrition education. Each also will receive body composition, personalized nutritional analysis and comprehensive wellness assessments.

Let’s all keep Bobby in mind as he takes part in this opportunity of a lifetime. A year from now, we would love to cover his success story as well!
