Mothapalooza 2014!

Registration now open; Geauga Park District naturalists to lead field trip

Everyone is familiar with colorful day-flying butterflies. Far fewer are tuned in to the darker side of the Lepidopteran world: MOTHS. But did you know that moth species outnumber butterflies by a factor of 22? It’s true! Most moths fly under cover of darkness and are more difficult to observe.

No matter your level of interest or ability, join Mothapalooza for a weekend of moth and butterfly appreciation, field trips and workshops June 27 through 29 at Burr Oak State Park in eastern Ohio’s Morgan and Athens counties.

Expert-led interpretive field trips will visit various hotspots in the 2,500+ acre Burr Oak State Park Resort and adjacent Wayne National Forest, including one led by Geauga Park District Naturalist Linda Gilbert. These will include nightly mothing experiences and daytime outings for butterflying, birding and native plant appreciation.

Professionals in the field will also present programs and conduct workshops on moth rearing, photography, attraction techniques and more – among them, one hosted by Geauga Park District Field Naturalist Tami Gingrich, who will teach the Art of Raising Lepidoptera.

Back in Geauga County, Tami and Linda will also host MOTH MADNESS, an all-night mothing event, at Big Creek Park the night of May 31 to June 1. Stay tuned  for details online.

Mothapalooza lodging is available at Burr Oak Lodge and in nearby Athens. For more information and to register, visit this website  or email mothapalooza@gmail.com.
