Geauga County seniors ages 55 and up have plenty of scheduled activities to enjoy in their parks all year long, particularly with the addition of a weekly bike outing on The Maple Highlands Trail!
Geauga Cyclists travel the trail together each Wednesday 3 to 4:30 p.m. (not 4 to 5:30 p.m. as previously listed) – no registration required. Just bring your own bike, helmet and water to meet the group at the Park Avenue trailhead parking area behind Marc’s in Chardon to join an escorted ride.
If walking is more your speed, join Geauga Walkers for seasonal naturalist-led Tuesday hikes from 1 to 2:30 p.m., each lasting a mile to a mile and a half. Space is extremely limited this summer, though, so don’t wait long to register. In fact, only two hikes presently have openings this season: July 27 at Whitlam Woods and August 10 at Big Creek Park.
Then there are the Elderberries, who meet monthly at a different park to enjoy a totally different adventure. This summer, come out for traditional camp fun including archery, crafts and more on Thursday, August 19, 9 a.m. to noon, at Chickagami Park. Or delve into a special Astronomy Night on Thursday, September 16, 7 to 9 p.m. at Observatory Park. There we’ll have two groups rotating between a planetarium show and night sky viewing (weather permitting) to peer deep into the night sky in search of planets, nebula and other celestial features.
Geauga Park District’s special offerings for seniors are all collaborations with the Geauga County Department on Aging, and University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center teams up with us for Elderberries.
To register for those programs that require it, visit www.geaugaparkdistrict.org under Programs & Events and choose Program Type: Seniors/grandparents, or call 440-226-4695 or 440-226-4636 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Note that Geauga County residents can register for all of these now, but Elderberries registration is slightly delayed for those who live outside of the county.
