Senior Joseph Cermak (Middlefield) has been named a National Merit Finalist in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship program.
Less than one percent of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the National Merit competition qualified as finalists. Joe is now eligible to compete for National Merit Scholarships totaling more than $32 million to be awarded in the spring.
“The finalist determination is the last step in the National Merit selection process. While we never had any doubt that Joe would reach this point, it’s great news for him, his family, and NDCL to have the official word from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation,” commented Principal Mr. Joseph A. Waler.
“We’re all very proud, not only of Joe’s accomplishment, but also of the positive impact he has had on our school community for the past four years,” Mr. Waler added.
Last fall Joe qualified as a National Merit semi-finalist by scoring exceptionally well on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. To earn finalist status, he submitted a successful application detailing his academic records, participation in school and community activities, leadership abilities, honors, and awards.
