The color-coded cutaway of the new Ford F150 pickup stole the show at this year’s National Automobile Dealer Association meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana. The new truck has a body that is almost exclusively made of aluminum, meaning the pickup’s weight is dramatically reduced (by 500-700 pounds depending on cab layout and bed length), a move that will help fuel economy. That will translate to 30% better fuel economy than its predecessor. Because Ford is using military grade aluminum, it’s said that the switch won’t compromise capability; it will actually enhance the driver’s experience, from ride and handling to braking performance.
With the change, the Preston Collision Center will also be spending 50 thousand dollars on upgrades. These upgrades will make us the only Ford certified Body Shop to work on aluminum in the area. Preston Collision Center will have an I-Car trained technician to work specifically on aluminum and will add a dedicated bay equipped with special tools, welders, and curtains to keep aluminum dust away from steel dust.
One of the tricky things about working on aluminum is that if any steel particles touch bare aluminum, it can cause corrosion. Also, the combination of dust particles, including steel, aluminum, and body filler, can actually be combustible. Preston is investing heavily in a state of the art curtain system equipped with lighting and vacuum systems. We have already begun purchases and are excited about the future, as Ford has hinted at other models moving towards more aluminum usage.
The new F150 has been engineered to be a dramatically better truck in every dynamic aspect. Ford has also made changes to the exterior and interior styling of the truck. You will notice a bigger front grille and front and rear LED lighting. The interior is modern but simple with a lot of room in the cabin. The truck will also be offered with four different engines, two of which will have EcoBoost technology.
