“Team Coding Tigers” Spend Summer Learning and Collaborating

Animated stories, flying Super Hero cartoons, bouncing balls on a computer screen with hand gestures, drawing shapes on demand, computer program greeting you by your name…if this sounds like next generation technology, then behold this is exactly what five fifth grade students from Chagrin Falls Schools did during their summer vacation. All of this was made possible with eight 45-minute sessions, each combined with their imagination, passion to create and willingness to learn something new. The fifth grade team included Shlok Bhattacharya, Nicholas Rohde, Griffin Laws, Liam Butler, and Jason Cheng.

“Computer programming is becoming a critical skill for these next generation kids with communication with devices becoming more and more prevalent,” said parent and leader of the group Sujoy Bhattacharya. “Kids with computer programming skills will be more creators of new technologies than just users or consumers of these technologies. Computer programming is all about problem solving, critical thinking and trial and error.”

Some of the team’s projects can be found at the Scratch Studio link https://scratch.mit.edu/studios/2999471/.

“It was rewarding to see Mr. Bhattacharya work with these students over the summer, teaching them various aspects of coding and then watching them demonstrate an incredible set of skills including trial and error, problem solving, and critical thinking,” said Mike Daugherty, Director of Technology and Information Systems, Chagrin Falls Schools.

Chagrin Falls Technology Director Earns the Certified Education Technology Leader (CETL) tm Designation

Mike Daugherty, director of technology and information systems, Chagrin Falls Schools, recently earned the Certified Education Technology Leader (CETL) designation by passing a rigorous certification exam.

“The CETL certification, awarded by the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), signifies that Mike has mastered the knowledge and skills needed to bring 21 st century technology to our K-12 school system,” said Robert Hunt, superintendent, Chagrin Falls Schools. “Chagrin Falls’ teachers are always striving to give their students the best learning experience. Now, with Mike’s extended knowledge, we will continue to give our students the technological advantage they need to succeed.”

“Earning the Certified Education Technology Leader certification demonstrates a commitment to bringing 21st century learning to our nation’s schools. Because of the CETL re-certification requirements, certified leaders pledge to stay current in this ever-changing field of education technology,” said Keith Krueger, CAE, Chief Executive Officer of CoSN.

In order to become certified, Daugherty had to demonstrate his experience in the education technology field and pass a comprehensive two-part examination based on the 10 skill areas in CoSN’s Framework of Essential Skills of the K-12 CTO. To maintain the CETL certification, Daugherty will need to complete 60 hours of professional development activities every three years.

The CETL certification is awarded by the Consortium for School Networking. Founded in 1992, CoSN is the premier professional association for school system technology leaders and its mission is to empower educational leaders to leverage technology to realize engaging learning environments. CoSN is committed to providing the leadership, community, and advocacy tools essential for the success of these leaders.
