Geauga County’s Sage’s Apples will be featured in the September/October issue of Our Ohio magazine, mailed out to over 200,000 Ohioans. The article details the history of the Sage family who arrived to farm in the area in 1842.

Chardon’s snowy winters and elevation above Lake Erie has provided the perfect climate for the family to grow apples on its recently designated Century Farm for more than 100 years. In the 1950s, the family started growing a newly created apple variety, the Melrose apple, which became a quick customer favorite and eventually was named Ohio’s state apple.

Currently three generations of Sages help out on the farm, including the farm’s matriarch Eleanor, sons Bob and John, and their children Benjamin and Stephanie, respectively. The farm now boasts a year-round market and offers 50 apple varieties, in season. The Sage family enjoys giving back to the community through several activities, including donating to food banks and Meals on Wheels.
