Protect Geauga Parks Presents Wetlands Program

Wetlands1 FB

One (of the many) reasons that Protect Geauga Parks is so intent upon the protection of our park land is that in Geauga County Ohio we are very lucky to have the highest density of large intact wetlands in Ohio.

This is especially important because Ohio has lost (drained, developed and paved) over 90 percent of its historic wetlands, making Ohio two out of 50 in wetland loss.

Wetlands act as the Lungs and Kidneys of the local ecosystem, working to keep our groundwater, streams, rivers and lakes oxygenated and clean. Preservation of intact wetlands is the most efficient and cost effective way to protect clean water, sequester carbon and provide diverse habitat for the future.

Wetland restoration and constructed wetlands are important, vital projects that need to be done but in Geauga County we have an amazing opportunity to SAVE existing wetlands through land preservation.

Preservation can be done for a fraction of the cost of restoration and nature does a far better job than man-made structures.

Check out some recent research and maps that show the intact wetlands here!

Our March 20 presentation “Wetlands Will Save the World!” will focus on the value of preservation and restoration of Wetlands.

Protect Geauga Parks presents this program on Sunday, March 20 at 2 p.m. at Bainbridge Town Hall, 17826 Chillicothe Rd. in Bainbridge.

All are welcome! This program is free and open to the public.
