Put your Name on the Bird Banding Hotline for some Winter Birding with Geauga Park District Naturalists

When it comes to guided birding this winter in Geauga Park District, there is truly something for everyone – from active counting to the most casual of observation.

Did you know that the winter finch forecast is predicting a southern movement of siskins, redpolls, grosbeaks and crossbills this year? Put your name on the Bird Banding Hotline call list via Geauga Park District or 440-286-9516 and we will call you when naturalists decide to throw up a mist net at The West Woods Nature Center and do some banding at the feeders between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

Geauga Park District-collected results during two international bird counts this winter will fuel conservation action and research: the Burton Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, January 5th, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at The West Woods Nature Center; and the Great Backyard Bird Count on Friday, February 15th, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Swine Creek Reservation’s lodge, as well as Friday and Saturday, February 15th and 16th, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center. Stop in to help park staff volunteers count!

To enjoy a cup of joe and some more casual bird observation, attend Coffee with the Birds on Saturday, January 12th, 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., at The West Woods Nature Center, or Saturday, February 23rd, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Swine Creek Reservation.

And if you’ve never done any of this before, have no fear: we have beginners programming for you, too.

Join Cristin Smith from Nature’s Way Bird Products as she presents tips on feeding wild birds during Backyard Bird Feeding Basics on Saturday, January 12th, 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at The West Woods Nature Center. This program will cover types of feeders, seed to use, and the best combination to attract the widest variety of birds, plus easy squirrel-proofing, and include a raffle to win a free bird feeder.

Then put what you’ve learned to practice during Birding for Beginners on Sunday, February 3rd, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Swine Creek Reservation’s lodge. You and other beginning birders will practice identifying the birds found at our feeders, then head out to see what birds can be found along the Squaw Root Trail.

Registration is not required for any of these programs, only the call list. Please call 440-286-9516 with questions.
