Red Maple Inn Adds Finishing Touch To Centuries Old VIllage

Over two centuries ago, a family by the name of Umberfield arrived in Burton from Connecticut. Their daughter Stella married Eleazer Hiscox and they built a home right in the center of town in 1838. Some years later, Stella wanted her father to move from his log cabin to their Burton home. Mr. Umberfield, however, was not willing to leave the cabin which he had lived in for so long. Hmmm…what would you do?

If the man is not willing to leave his home, then why not bring his home along, too!

So a dismantling party of sorts began, and in 1849 both Mr. Umberfield and his beloved log home were moved to their new location. The cabin was attached to the side porch of Stella’s house. That home still stands right in the center of Burton, just off the square as the main museum of Century Village Historical society.

Many unique and interesting buildings and homes have been moved to the grounds of Century Village since then and restored to their original beauty.

The Village now has several restaurants, a wonderful library, antique shops, a grocery store, hardware store, and a bank. But even after a century and a half, one thing still lacked. Visitors who came to Burton to enjoy Century Village along with the many events, parks, Amish businesses, and beauty of the County had to find lodging elsewhere. There was no room in the inn….because there was no inn!

Then, along came a man with a vision.

Just like Bob Newhart did in his TV series, Gordon Safran changed his career. Gordon, along with his wife Evie, sold their 42 store E.B. Brown Optician’s chain in 1996. Gordon had always loved the Burton area, especially the breathtaking views into the Cuyahoga Valley. He saw the need for a country inn where people could relax and have a place for special events and business meetings. Gordon, as owner of E.B. Brown, had many of his meetings in the country and found that he “got much more done” than when in an urban setting.

However, it was easier said than done, as he encountered many roadblocks before the Inn was opened in March of 1999. It took over a year to convince the out-of-state landowner to sell the property. Another year was needed for Burton Village to approve the project and still another year to build it.

“It was well worth it as it has all the amenities I’ve thought necessary in a bed and breakfast. In fact, Evie always wanted all the lights out in our own room when we traveled and I liked a light on. So, when we built the Inn, we had a win-win situation by having a light without a switch placed in the bathroom. Now people can open or shut the door for the amount of light they want!” Safran said.

The Red Maple Inn has filled the lodging void, making it possible for visitors from near and far to fully enjoy the dozens of events in and around Burton, to experience life in an Amish community, or just to unwind in a quiet country haven of beauty.

Many have returned year after year – families, couples, and singles.

May ushers in a plentiful list of choices for those seeking to get out and about including the popular Spring Drive-it-Yourself Tour on May 3; a Wizard of Oz performance on weekends through May 18 (check out the theater package the Inn offers); the Grand River Valley Wine N Bloom Wine Trail on May 9 and 10; and a grand selection of events over the Memorial Day weekend. See a full event list HERE.

Why do these folks come again and again?

“Second time… still a charm”
We just spent the weekend here and if possible, it was more delightful than our first time several years ago. We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast both mornings, and it was heaven to sit and relax at night with complimentary wine, cheese, and crackers next to a warm fireplace. Karen at the front desk is warm and friendly, and Kathy, our server was just as nice. Our room was beautiful, the jacuzzi relaxed us, and we will recommend this beautiful place to anyone who needs a pampering getaway!

“My favourite hotel in the area”
Red Maple Inn
We’ve stayed there on more than 10 occasions and always came back. They even accommodated us on nights that we would check-in very late because of work. Really nice, clean and big rooms, great service and a great view of the valley. The breakfast was very good as well.

Beautiful! I am in love!! What a great place for a romantic getaway. We are so impressed with all the small touches: the robes, and candy on the pillows, etc. This couldn’t have been more enjoyable and we haven’t even had breakfast yet! My husband and I love room 204 we will definitely be returning. Gordon had a great idea when he foresaw this project!! “Heaven” that’s where we’ve been for 2 fabulous nights!!
