Here at Geauga News we have some very exciting things happening. Just over a week ago we moved to our main URL geauganews.com and along with that, we started exploring more ways that we can reward you and your friends in our community by giving you ways to share the positive local news that is happening right here in Geauga County!
Everything you do makes a huge difference to all of us here in the community!
That is what today’s post is all about, and in order to explain some of the things we are going to ask you to help us with, we’ll be going into detail about where we are at now, and the steps that are necessary to keep our positive momentum going.
This is a longer more technical post, but we’re asking that you take the time to read through it, and do whatever you can to help us. Everything you do makes a huge difference to all of us here in the community!
We are going to cover a couple of online marketing terms and tactics and then explain our goals here in this post today so that:
- You can understand what we are doing and why
- So you can understand how you can help us get the word out about Geauga County’s positive local news source faster
- So you can apply these same positive tools in the future should you ever need to promote your own positive news or program
What Does Going “Viral” Mean Online
Some of us here at Geauga News are a little “nerdy” and spend a lot of time on the internet figuring out ways to reach more people with social media. One of the terms that you’ll start to hear more of when you begin to research online marketing, is the word “viral”.
Yesterday we had a mini-viral post on Facebook, did you see it? If not, take a look below:
What happened here is that the timing of our photo post was very fortunate (we can’t plan or pretend to say that we know when a photo will succeed), and was noticed by and promoted by all of you over 56 times! Going “viral”, as we like to say on the internet, means that something quickly gains popularity and reaches a large number of people.
Here Are Some Statistics
As we write this post, there are 870 people who like us on our Facebook page. The photo post above was promoted by approximately 6.5% of you (56 people), and probably was seen by 500+ people total. The additional people saw it because when you comment or like something it shows up on your wall feed, and in the new Facebook news feed on the upper right as well. As a result of this casual promotion, we gained about 10 new subscribers. In other words – roughly 2% of the people who were exposed to this post because you liked it, shared it, or commented on it.
Without even trying to, your interaction on this photo helped us spread the news about Geauga News. That is a small and simple example of the power of social media. When we work together, we can do some really positive things with the technology that we have at our fingertips today.
A Little More About the Math of Sharing
Now that you’ve seen what a mini-viral post can do for the growth of our community here, I want you to consider the following equation as well. When we get together and focus on doing something as a team, the results can be incredible.

Right now there are 870 members in our community as we write this. There will be more by the time you read this post. If all of us could convince each member to get just one more new friend to like us and become a member of our page, the math is pretty simple. We’d quickly be over 1700 members, and would be on our way to reaching almost 2% of the Geauga County population.
Remember Our Goals:
I want you to consider the opportunity that you have to spread positive local news in your community. When our impact grows much faster, as we discussed above, this opportunity becomes a reality much sooner. As our reach grows, we’ll be able to more quickly achieve the goals of promoting local businesses, helping local charities, providing upbeat local news, and connecting our entire community to one positive Geauga County news source. That’s why we really need your help in spreading the word!

The Reality of Who Will Take Action
When you begin to get involved with a community like Geauga News, you’ll start to see a pattern of which people are able to interact and take action, and which can’t or don’t. On some days certain people have the time to promote something or comment on a post, while at other times they don’t.

With that in mind, we want to ask for your help during the times that you are able to get involved in spreading the word. Instead of assuming that each one of us in the community will spread the word to one new member, let’s estimate that only 200 of us can take time today to share Geauga News with a friend. If we want to reach the same goal of 870 new members, then each of us needs to find 5 new friends who don’t know about our online community yet. If 200 of us make this our goal, and we reach our goal, we will see incredible results!
