Once again, Geauga Park District’s Caveman Crawl 5K Trail Run returns with hopes to beat last year’s registration figures (417 runners and walkers) for a good cause on Sunday, June 14, at The West Woods in Russell Township.
Registration forms are available online at http://bit.ly/gpdcaveman. The cost of online registration and registration by Packet Pickup (postmarked by June 8) is $20. The price of race day registration will be $25 and the first 250 registrants are guaranteed this year’s commemorative T-shirt.
All proceeds from this race benefit the Chip Henry Institute for Outdoor Adventure, which funds youth programming in the parks, including summer camps for youth entering grades 5 through 10.
So what about the course? Well, just over 3.1 miles of hilly, well-graded dirt and gravel make it one of the more challenging 5Ks around. It also includes portions of Ansel’s Cave Trail, known for its beautiful Sharon conglomerate rock outcroppings – not to mention the forest views and wildlife just around the bend.
Prehistoric garb is encouraged, with a costume contest for youth and adult categories near the starting line. Judges score on a scale of 1-5. The categories are originality, enthusiasm and authenticity. Awards will be in the form of lovely handcrafted wood.
Need a costume quick? Just mention you’re participating in the contest and get 15% off at Perfect Occasion Costumes in Middlefield!
After the race, chip-timed by Greater Cleveland XC, the top three 5K runners will also take home handcrafted awards. Other top racers will be recognized as well in the top three places in nine different age groups, in both male and female categories. (Of course, for cavemen, timing didn’t actually matter – winning was beating that saber-toothed tiger on their heels!)
Race time is 9 a.m.; registration is from 7 to 8:30 a.m.; costume judging begins at 8:30 a.m.; and free food and awards will follow.
Geauga Park District is grateful for the generous sponsorship of University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center, Fairmount Santrol, Paul Davis Restoration, Junction Auto Family, Frat. Order of Eagles – Geauga #2261, Geauga Park District Foundation, Sunrise Springs, Kinetico and the Geauga Family YMCA.
For its fifth year, let’s see if we can blow attendance records out of the woods!
