Runners Get and Give More than Racing on April 24th at the Mentor Nissan 5K

Flat and fast 5K is linked with helping end childhood hunger.

Over two hundred Individual runners and walkers are expected to join together at Mentor Nissan (6960 Center Street) in Mentor on Sunday, April 24 to take part in the second annual Mentor Nissan 5K.  This rain or shine event run by GCXC Race Timing & Management is also available to those who prefer to run virtually.

Registration is currently open and also available onsite race morning from 7:45am – 8:45am.  Runners will take off on this flat and fast course at 9am. All participants will receive a high-quality unisex cotton blend shirt, finisher medal, $500 voucher towards a new Nissan and (1) free oil change at Mentor Nissan. Entry fee is $30 for both in-person and Virtual 5K.

This year, adding to the running event is a community support component.  Runners and spectators are asked to bring canned goods to the race.  A community food collection is being held to benefit End 68 Hours of Hunger.  This local organization focuses weekly on putting nourishing food in the hands of Lake County school children to carry them through the weekend. Without their weekend food supply, many children would go hungry for 68 hours each week.

How can you help?  All members of the community can donate any of the following items at the Mentor Nissan dealership during the week and day of the race.  Runners can also drop off food donations at Packet Pickup on Saturday, April 23 from 11am-5pm at Second Sole (8791 Mentor Avenue/Mentor).  Needed items:

Canned fruit, peanut butter, soup

Canned pasta, granola bars, pop tarts

Oatmeal, small boxes of bagged cereal

Mac and Cheese, Ramen

“What better way to highlight the needs of our community than through the events we are already holding,” states Managing Partner, Ray Sminchak.  “We are proud to partner with End 68 Hours of Hunger and will continue to do our part to help the students and children in Lake County.”
