Rescue Village has officially kicked off their #GivingTuesday campaign by sharing “#TailsOfGivingTuesday,” stories told every Tuesday from now until #GivingTuesday (November 29th) of animals who have passed through our doors and left big paw prints on our hearts.
This week, was the story of Petunia, a pot-bellied pig who came to us after Portage County APL found her abandoned in a park in the bitter cold of winter. The Portage APL Humane Agent knew Petunia had been abandoned because of the tire tracks and bag of feed that were left behind. After a few months, when no one was inquiring about her for adoption, Portage asked if Rescue Village could help Petunia find her home.
Sweet Petunia lived in our barn all through spring and summer 2016. While she loved her life here, we worried she wouldn’t find a home before winter. Barn animals are much more difficult to find homes for than any cat or dog and Petunia was particularly difficult as she was a very large pot-bellied pig. But, in September 2016, her new family finally walked through our doors and she went to a perfectly piggly forever home.
Barn animals are much harder to find homes for and their stay in a shelter is often much longer than that of a cat or a dog’s. Rescue Village’s Barn Animal Rescue Program is one of only a few in Ohio and really the only one in Northeast Ohio.
You can help piggies like Petunia, as well as horses, cows, goats, and any other barn animal in need, find their forever homes by donating on Giving Tuesday or by starting a fundraiser for Giving Tuesday. We need all of the support we can get to pay for our barn critters’ medical needs, food and care. No animal, whether they have paws, hooves, talons, or fins should ever be abandoned.
