Teeth Aren’t Pearly, Until You Smile

How To Grow Kids With Those Perfect Pearly Whites!

We try to engage the child from the beginning- talking with them, finding out what their interests are, playing blocks with them at the block table, bouncy balls, coloring, etc. Gaining their trust is key to a successful appointment.

What parent doesn’t want their child’s mouth to gleam with one of those ‘pearly’ white beauties? Even before that very first tooth pokes its little white bud through the gums, parents can begin to lead their child down a path which results in a confident, bright smile. How? By establishing a relationship at a very young age with a fun, caring, highly competent dentist like Dr. Jason Majors. He recommends massaging the gums of your baby to help him get acclimated to that sensation as a precursor to the actual brushing. At one year of age, “We encourage parents to bring their child with them to appointments to get used to lights, sounds, etc. so by age three they are usually able to tolerate a cleaning,” says Dr. Majors. Making a child’s visit to their office something to look forward to is part of their family-centered philosophy. “We try to engage the child from the beginning- talking with them, finding out what their interests are, playing blocks with them at the block table, bouncy balls, coloring, etc. Gaining their trust is key to a successful appointment.”

Just like adult patients, Dr. Jason likes to see his younger patients for checkups and cleanings twice a year. This allows him to keep an eye on the child’s oral health and development, make recommendations about home care, and answer any questions you might have about your child’s smile. Every child is different when it comes to personal care of his or her teeth, so be sure to inspect their work until you are sure they are following good dental cleaning habits. And don’t forget to pay attention to what they eat! “Diet is important- obviously low sugar is good. Monitor the fruit juice, gatorade, etc. If they have high sugar content, it can promote early decay. Always rinse, if nothing else, after these foods or drinks.

How about this scenario – or something similar:

“Help! My son just took a crash landing on the sidewalk and his tooth is… broken, (chipped, or GONE!)”

What do you in this case? “Most important – make sure your child is okay,” says Dr. Jason. “Calm them down and assess the situation. Call your dentist right away if they are in pain. If the tooth has been lost, place it in milk and bring it along to the dentist.”

As your child gets older, Dr. Jason will use a variety of treatments to ensure solid healthy growth of the teeth. More thorough cleanings, fluoride supplements, and sealants designed to cover rough craggy areas susceptible to bacteria are applied as needed. Dr. Jason focuses on cavity prevention with children since most kids don’t make it a high priority to do so themselves! If the need for braces arises, a local orthodontist will be recommended, but maintaining optimal dental health throughout that process will still be key to overall healthy teeth.
