The Geauga Park District Quarterly Calendar of Events: September 2018

  • Geauga Walkers (For active seniors) – Tuesday, September 11th, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. at Chickagami Park

Join other active seniors on weekly hikes of 1-1 ½ miles long in Geauga County and the surrounding area. A naturalist leads hikes scheduled in Geauga Park District parks. Call Geauga Senior Center for full schedule, 440-279-2137. Held year round.

  • West Woods Wednesdays Farm Market – Wednesday, September 12th, 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at The West Woods, Deer Run & Turkey Run Shelters

Purchase locally made/grown items at The West Woods the second Wednesday of each month this summer, June through September! Strolling musicians and a food truck selling dinner/snacks will make your evening more enjoyable. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

  • The Bird Tornado Strikes Again! – Wednesday, September 12th, 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at Berkshire High School

Witness a cyclone of hundreds of Chimney Swifts swirling, then plummeting into an old chimney used as a migratory motel on their journey to South America. An unforgettable spectacle! Wheelchair/stroller accessible. NATURE’S NOT TO BE MISSED.

  • Chagrin River Bird Quest Birding Challenge – Friday, September 14th, 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at The West Woods, Nature Center

Calling all bird enthusiasts: this is a 24-hour birding marathon! To participate, get a team together and register with the Audubon Society of Greater Cleveland at Cleveland Audubon. Then come into the nature center or the Novak Education Center in Aurora for team check-in and final registration, where you can also pick up maps, checklists and T-shirts and talk strategy with teammates and naturalists. All materials and activities are free. Refreshments provided. Wheelchair/stroller accessible. NATURE’S NOT TO BE MISSED.

  • Chagrin River Bird Quest Celebration – Saturday, September 15th, 4:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at The West Woods

This event is for those who registered as a team the previous day…the 24-hour Chagrin River Bird Quest ends with a celebration! Turn in your bird checklists for judging during these hours at the nature center or the Novak Education Center in Aurora, then enjoy hearty refreshments, awards and door prizes. Details at Cleveland Aububon. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

  • Nassau Astronomy Night with CVAS – Saturday, September 15th, 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. at Observatory Park, Nassau Astronomical Station

Join members of the Chagrin Valley Astronomical Society to take in the wonders of the night sky using our newly restored research-grade telescope! Stop in and discover this amazing facility and all that it has to offer. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

  • Monarchs & Meadow Insects – Sunday, September 16th, 12:30 p..m. – 4:00 p.m. at Orchard Hills Park, Lodge

  • Celebration on the Chagrin: Scenic Rivers 50th Anniversary – Sunday, September 16th, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Bass Lake Preserve, Bass Lake Lodge

Celebrate 50 years of Ohio’s Scenic Rivers Program at Bass Lake Preserve, a designated scenic river site and natural lake on the Chagrin. Local resource professionals will lead a variety of family-friendly aquatic adventures including stream exploration, canoeing, strolls through Spring Brook Sanctuary, and close encounters with Chagrin River critters including Ohio’s treasured brook trout! Collaboration with the Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District, ODNR Division of Parks & Watercraft, Scenic Rivers Program, and other conservation partners.   • Elderberries: Strolling in Fields of Gold – Thursday, September 20th, 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. at Orchard Hills Park, Lodge

Take in the splendor of late summer wildflowers, play with Praying Mantises, gallivant with goldfinches, tag migrating Monarch Butterflies for science and more on a short walk, complete with lunch in the shelter. Tours of the trail will also be given on the EZ Go Cart. Co-hosted by the Geauga Department on Aging and University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center. Partially wheelchair/stroller accessible.
