Who likes popcorn? How about ice cream?
If you answered yes to either, then come along with me as we visit the Popcorn Shop just outside of Geauga County in Chagrin Falls. When I think of Chagrin Falls a few thoughts come to mind. Of course I think of taking walks along the quaint streets while listening to the roar of the falling water. I also remember the days when I took part in the famous pumpkin roll down Main Street. Good times. One of my sweetest memories, though, would be visiting the Popcorn Shop. I always looked forward to walking out the front door with a scoop of my favorite ice cream in one hand and a bag of popcorn for later in my other hand.

Dating Back to 1875
The Popcorn Shop is located at 53 Main Street. However, before it was doling out such delicious goodies, it served as a retail store for flour. In 1875, the store was constructed adjoining the hydro-powered flour mill to showcase “The Pride of the Falls” grocery items. It was complete with a water-wheel driven gristmill powered by the Chagrin River. In 1949, Dorothy McClennan then opened the Popcorn Shop and served the community for many years. Unfortunately, in November of 2000, the Popcorn Shop suffered an accident. A van had slammed into the front of the shop after losing its brakes coming down the perpendicular street, dislodging it from the bridge it abuts and nearly pushing the whole building into the Chagrin River. The accident forced the shop to close. Then in 2001, along came Dewey Forward, a veteran restaurant and night club owner. After purchasing the Popcorn Shop along with the original owners, the building was completely restored and re-opened to the public.
A Famous Visitor
In September of 2004, the Popcorn Shop received one very special visitor. On a stop during his re-election campaign, President George W. Bush, his wife and two daughters had a taste for something sweet. Together they enjoyed some ice cream, and the First Lady purchased several cans of popcorn.

Tasty Treats
Upon entering the shop, one will find different varieties of popcorn, a few of which include cheddar, sweet and salty, and chocolate. If it’s ice cream you’re after, many different flavors are served, but perhaps most popular with the kids might just be superman. Memorabilia and gifts about the area are also available, and for you caffeine lovers, don’t worry – they have a fine selection of coffees. From a flour mill to a popcorn shop, this Chagrin Falls icon is sure to bring a smile to your face along with a memory or two!
