Visit Amish homes to marvel at nesting colonies of Purple Martins and Cliff Swallows during a bus trip through Geauga County.

What: Purple Martin & Swallow Colony Tour

When: Saturday, June 8 – 9 a.m. to Noon

Where: Meet in Burton to load the bus (details provided upon registration)

This jaunt in the beautiful Geauga countryside, a three-hour bus trip, sets out with the goal of seeing all six species of Ohio’s swallows. Marvel at the large Purple Martin colonies hosted by Amish homes and businesses while taking notes on these established techniques for establishing and maintaining nesting colonies of these delightful birds.

Stops include a sand and gravel mine to see a colony of Bank Swallows; a bridge to see Barn Swallows; a barn to see Cliff Swallows; and Rough-winged Swallows wherever we can find them!

Registration is required online or call 440-286-9516, and bus fare costs $15 for what has proven to be a most enjoyable morning in the country.

This trip is suitable for those 12 and older. It is also only partially wheelchair/stroller accessible; there is a short distance of walking from parking areas to observation points, but wheelchair accessibility is available at most stops to viewing vantage points.
