Middlefield, OH – Two Cardinal High School teachers are in the midst of a year-long training program learning about technologies for use in their classrooms in the Trailblazer Teachers program, managed by Battelle Education and supported by Ohio’s Straight A Fund.
Last fall, Math teacher Dan Chenoweth and Social Studies teacher Brian George were two of sixteen teachers selected for the program from a pool of more than 100 applications on the basis of a recommendation from a local school administrator and their use of technology. The program consists of two parts. A four-part training curriculum provides educators with the effective strategies and tools for teaching in a modern classroom. The 16 teachers also collaborate with each other throughout the year to share ideas and practices. In May 2016, each teacher published a set of resources for other schools to use and again presented their information at the Connect for Success conference June 13-14, 2016 in Columbus.
Additionally, the training focuses on ways to incorporate digital resources into the classroom. For example, teachers use an online quiz to learn what students know and then personalize teaching to cover each student’s needs. One major focus has been a method known as blended learning, in which students learn through a combination of in-person and online teaching.
“Dan and I were selected to take part in this program with the goal in mind of creating blended learning courses to demonstrate to other teachers how they can incorporate these techniques into their classes,” says George. “Over the course of three trainings we learned from Dr. Lisa Hervey of NC State and also Greg Garner how to flip and blend lessons to incorporate technology. This has been a great experience and we are really honored to take part in the program.”
