5.5 Mill Levy is First New Levy to Pass Since 1992
The Cardinal Local School District would like to thank the voters of Middlefield Village, Middlefield Township, Parkman, and Huntsburg for supporting our district and voting “yes” for Issue 1. “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for supporting this District,” says Superintendent Dr. Scott J. Hunt. “We want you to know that we take your support very seriously, and we promise to continue to be fiscally transparent, conservative, and responsible in our approach to balancing the district’s annual budget.” The Geauga County Board of Elections shows an unofficial levy tally of 1319 votes for the levy and 1056 against the levy. In addition, unofficial Trumbull county votes show 2 votes for the levy and 0 votes against.
The 5.5 mill levy will generate $1.7 million for the district’s general fund budget, which was facing a $1.8 million deficit in the coming school year. The money Cardinal will collect from this new levy will help maintain the daily operations of the district. The District will begin collecting on the money in 2018. “It will be almost a year before we see any of the money come to the district, so unfortunately, this doesn’t reverse any staffing and program cuts that have already been made, but what it will do, is ensure that we can continue to operate and work to put the district in a better financial position.”
Thank you to the Supporters of Cardinal Local Schools volunteers who worked tirelessly to get the message out about the importance of passing this levy. We appreciate their efforts and thank them for their work. We would also like to thank the many students and staff who also volunteered their time to support and raise awareness for this effort.
The passage of Issue 1 is an excellent first step in protecting and preserving the Cardinal Local School District, but there is still work to be done. We will again need the community’s support in November to pass a renewal levy. This levy will be at no additional cost to taxpayers and will help ensure the future of Cardinal Schools stays in Cardinal hands.
Thank you again for your support of our students, staff, and District as a whole. Tremendous changes are already happening at Cardinal, and we are elated to be able to continue the positive enhancements.
