Valentine’s Day is a special day. But it should not always be a day you feel obligated to buy something for your significant other. I am not saying that you should not spend money on the person you love and cherish, but consider these things that I think are more important than the gifts.
As Valentine’s Day approaches, think over the past year you have been with this person. Think about the best times you had and what surprised you most about them. How many times did they sacrifice something big or small to make you happy or help you? We need to realize how important they have become in our lives and how thankful we are for them. How many times did they drop something for you or kept you from making a mistake?
Next, think about why you love them. I love my girlfriend. She is my best friend and she knows more about me than anyone else. She is beautiful and I can never be around her enough. She makes me laugh and has a great sense of humor. She deals with me at my worst and always forgives me when I make mistakes. She pushes me to be the best person I can be, supports me, and encourages me to pursue my goals even when I lose sight of them at times. I know I can always depend on her if I really need something. These are just a few of the reasons I am so thankful I have her and why I love her so much.
Now, think about how you can make them feel special and show that you truly love them. When Valentine’s Day comes, pick a few of the reasons you love them so much and make sure to tell them. Get a card and mention in it a few of the times they amazed you in the past year and how lucky you are to have such a wonderful person in your life that cares so much and does the unimaginable for you sometimes.
If you can’t afford to go out, or something has come up, make the best of wherever or whatever you will be doing with them. My girlfriend and I will be babysitting her nephew on Valentine’s Day. We are going to cook a dinner together and not worry about doing anything crazy. It doesn’t matter because we will be with each other and that is what’s most important. We will talk about our relationship and how much we cherish each other. That is what Valentine’s Day is all about.
