In the early afternoon of Saturday March 22, 2014, thirty-four area fire departments from Bainbridge, Newbury, Hiram, Mesopotamia, Bristol, Middlefield, Munson, Troy, Auburn, Hambden, Ravenna, Edinburg, Rootstown, Braceville, Burton, Mecca, Deerfield, Palmyra, Parkman, Newton Falls, Warren, Montville, Southington, Aurora, Chagrin Falls, Windham, Russell, Charlestown, Farmington, Champion, Mantua, Chardon, Streetsboro and Paris came to assist Garrettsville Fire fighters in responding to the call for mutual aid as fire swept through a section of the historic 19th century commercial buildings in the village of Garrettsville.

Some 13 businesses were affected by this devastating fire including current businesses, Chic and Shabby Resale, One Real Peach, The Barber of G’ville, Miller Lawn & Garden, T & B Tools, Shaker Tree, Shiffler Clock Repair, New Hearing, Foot & Ankle Center, Attorney offices, and Nelson Garrettsville Community Cupboard food bank. Along with these businesses were the memories of Irwin Hardware Store (one of the first businesses to build on Main Street).
Now, this is where you enter this story and make a difference in this tragic event. On Thursday, March 27, between the hours of 4-9 pm you can bring nonperishable food donations to The Creative Corner Hair Salon, located at 14549 Main St., Burton, Ohio during their Grand Re-opening where we will have trucks and trailers available for loading your donations. We will guarantee that all proceeds, whether canned goods or monetary, will be delivered to the Nelson Garrettsville Community Cupboard food bank. Garrettsville resident Brenda Bracken is the owner/operator of Creative Corner Hair Salon, and as many of you know, she recently went through her own business tragedy. Now that Brenda has rebuilt, it is her chance to make a difference for others. As Brenda expressed, “We would like to pay if forward for all of the kindness that was shown to us during our flood!”
You can make a difference! We all can, and all it takes is one canned good at a time. Collect from family and friends you know and deliver your items to this worthwhile event.
