Once in awhile you get to catch that sparkle, that moment of sunlight as it dips down and crosses the horizon. As the sun sets it’s not hot or cruel, it’s just warm and pleasant, as if it’s looking back and remembering the sunny filled memories from the day.
I like those days. I feel like those are the days when those who have gone before me are looking down and smiling at me. It’s moments like that where I have more hope, more joy, and more inspiration to keep living a good life, and loving the moments I’ve been blessed with.
When I walk into the Great Geauga County Fairgrounds, all those warm memories come back to me. The fair is the first day of the Indian summer for me. It’s the sign that fall is coming and that all the sunshine is about to turn the trees into beautiful oranges, reds, and golds. There is a crisp and bold taste of magic that comes to me as the seasons change. I am reminded of some of the bitter sweet lessons that life has taught me so far. I am reminded that today is the most important day to be kind and do something good.
These beautiful days at the end of summer remind me of what I believe in and what I stand for. I believe these are the types of things that each of us can connect with and aspire to. As I watch the seasons change and take time to meditate, I focus on this powerful list. Here are the things that I challenge myself to do daily, and I challenge you to do, too.
1. Give Thanks
I have learned that no matter what my current circumstances may be, I can always find things to be thankful for. Not only do we live in such an amazing and free country, but the exercise of giving thanks each day can help you combat the toughest circumstances and the darkest depression.
2. Give Back
As you awake each day this next week, stop thinking about what you need. You do need things, but start each day with thinking about what you can give. Give love. Give patience, give money, give time, give referrals, and give joy. There are so many things you can give that won’t cost you at all. They are the gifts that you already possess. Did you know that the giver is the one who receives the greatest benefit? Give back today.
3. Give Kindness
When life hurts us we are reeling in pain. We can’t think. The pain is so real and so harsh that we act out poorly sometimes. Or we get stuck with something we didn’t expect and we are crushed. Those moments happen in life frequently and they are generally unavoidable. So while we can’t avoid the pain, we can add kindness to the mix for ourselves and for others. Kindness will conquer the world if we give it a chance. It’s always a safe bet.
- When someone you employ fails – be kind
- When someone steals from you – be kind
- When your enemies hurt you, bite your tongue and be kind
- When you see someone struggle, be kind and step in and help
- Whenever you have the opportunity, be kind!
Take these three things and apply them everyday. It will help you to capture the beautiful and magical moments that life holds. When we give back, we truly experience all the beauty that life has to offer.
