Cardinal Baseball Gets Off to a Terrific Start

The baseball team finally got to play this week and they got off to a terrific start in their first game on Wednesday, April 9. Zack Butcher no-hit the Black Knights on the way to his first victory of the season. Clark Thurling added a double, a single, and 3 RBI’s. KC Cress singled and hit a 2 run home run in the bottom of the 5th to end it.

On Thursday, the Cardinal rally was too little, too late as the Huskies fell to the Cornerstone Christian Patriots 7-3. RJ Spaller got the win for the Patriots and Jake Bosak took the loss for the Huskies.

The Huskies have a busy week ahead if the weather cooperates. They will travel to Newbury on Wednesday, April 16; and go to Chardon to take on the Hilltoppers on Thursday, April 17.

Softball

The Huskies lost their home opener on Wednesday, April 9, to Kirtland by a score of 15-0 but came back to beat rival Berkshire 14-13 on Thursday. Ameleya Loeser preserved the win with a diving catch in left field to end the game. It was an exciting win for the Lady Huskies and Coach Ikeler is proud of team’s effort and progress.

The Huskies host Grand Valley in a double header on Saturday, April 12, and host Fairport on Monday, April 14.

Track

The Huskies were back in action on a cold, windy day at the Don Faix Invitational at Crestwood on Saturday, April 5. The girls placed 11th and the boys placed 9th. Leading the way for the girls with a strong day was Ashley Lucarelli who placed in the 400 (6th), 200 (7th) and was a member of the scoring 4×200 and 4×400 teams. Kathryn Dhayer had a good day as well placing in the 3200 and running a strong leg on the 5th place 4×800.

The boys were led by Brandon Wicks who took four 3rd places in the 100, 300 hurdles, long jump, and as a member of the 4×200. Brandon was joined by Eric McCaslin, Kevin Collier, and Peter Ribar on that relay. Peter placed 4th in shot put joining Lester Troyer (7th).

The girls track team lost a competitive meet against Orange and Gilmour on Tuesday, April 8. Orange scored 56.5 points, Gilmour scored 52.5, and Cardinal scored 42. Leading the way for the ladies was Sarah Riebe who won both the shot and disc. Kathryn Dhayer took second place in the high jump and mile. Ashley Lucarelli won the 400, while Sam Palla, Erin Ross, Trisha Cesar, and Elizabeth Timas also scored points.

The boys team lost to Gilmour and Orange while scoring 32 points. Kyle Simms took 3rd in the high jump and 4th in the 110 hurdles. Brandon Wicks long jumped over 20 feet to get second. Peter Ribar threw the disc over 125 feet placing 2nd and also placed in the 200 dash and shot put. Lester Troyer placed in both throwing events. Also scoring for the Huskies were Dakota Ward, Eric McCaslin, Kevin Collier, Brandon Neikerk, and Craig Shanower.

The teams were in action at the George Gross Invitational at Cuyahoga Heights on Thursday, April 10.
