Gilbert, a 13-week-old English Bulldog, visited classrooms at Cardinal’s Jordak Elementary and Intermediate schools March 30, 31 and April 1.
Students in Kindergarten through third grade took turns reading stories to Gilbert when he visited. “Research shows that students will work harder to improve their reading skills if they read to an animal,” says Jordak Elementary Principal Kelly Bearer. “We were thrilled that Gilbert’s owner allowed him to visit our students and give them an opportunity to work on their reading.”

Gilbert seemed to enjoy the stories, snuggling up to the students, listening intently and occasionally falling asleep on the carpet as the students read to him.
