Our Memorial Day Speaker is lifelong Geauga County resident and Navy Veteran Dave Mapes. If the names Mapes sounds familiar it because he and his accomplished floral designer wife Pamela, have operated Mapes Greenhouse and Nursery on land in Chesterland that his Great Grand Father purchased after returning from the Civil War. His parents Kenneth and Nettie built their first greenhouse in 1928. They retired in 1974 and Dave and Pamela took over the family business.
After graduating from West Geauga High School in 1966 Dave enlisted in the Navy. He celebrated his 18th birthday at Great Lakes Naval Training Center. His birthday present from the Navy was a haircut, new clothes and a message from his Drill Instructor followed by a walk around the base. Dave ended his naval career in 1969 aboard the USS Yosemite AD19 as a Machinist Mate.
Mapes Greenhouse is well known for its flats of flowers and vegetables, hanging baskets, potted plants and floral arraignments for all occasions. One of his larger customers was Shell oil which orders 7000 flats of flowers a year for its Ohio stations from Cincinnati to Cleveland.
What isn’t well known about Dave is that he has honored Veterans with over 4000 wooden plaques of thanks decorated with their service medallion, red, white and blue ribbon and silk roses. These plaques honoring veterans for their selfless service and sacrifice to their country have been distributed all over the world by Dave.
The Grand Marshal for the parade will be Mr. Dean Eppley. All groups, clubs, etc., are welcome to participate in the parade. Groups with minors must have adult supervision. This program is planned for the benefit of Newbury and surrounding communities. All veterans are welcome to participate in the program and parade with or without uniform. Call Dean Eppley at 564-7111 for parade events.
