Beards Behind Bars: National Beard and Mustache Enthusiasts to Gather in Mansfield, Ohio to Raise Awareness and Donations for Ohio State Reformation Society

Sporting beards and mustaches of all shapes and sizes, they’ll unite for a competition, yes – but also to raise awareness and donations for the Ohio State Reformation Society, to preserve the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio as a historical landmark.

Beards Behind Bars – Presented by Gnarly Beard Co. is slated for Saturday, July 1st, at the world-famous Ohio State Reformatory, with partner events for participants the days before and after the big show.

Beards of the Old Northwest, which takes great pride in its Cleveland-area community, has organized the weekend to gather like-minded people for a good cause, having hosted competitions to support many great organizations over the years.

“It’s a huge honor being asked to be a judge for the competition where it all started for me and at a venue that I love and respect” said Crestline native and judge for the event, Mike Weaver. Mr. Weaver works for Robert Kurtzman’s Creature Corps, which operates a haunted attraction at the Reformatory each October.

The club was approached by organizers at the Reformatory after the event the club organized last year in Cleveland and were eager to partner with them. To kick off the weekend, Goodfellows Pizzeria & Pub will host a “Welcome Party” on Friday, June 30th, to welcome out-of-town visitors to Mansfield.

Saturday’s competition will include 15 categories ranging from Women’s Fake to Full Beard Freestyle, for which participants will register themselves. General admission for competitors and spectators costs $20.00, with proceeds going to the Ohio State Reformation Society.

The event expects to draw contestants and spectators from across the country.

When doors open at 3:00 p.m., raffles for donated items will raise funds for the Ohio State Reformation Society; vendors and clubs will sell all types of beard-related items and club merchandise; and local food trucks will dish out grub for participants and spectators in the parking lot of the Ohio State Reformatory.

Once judges have awarded those most worthy, weekend festivities will wind up with a brunch on Sunday, July 2nd, hosted at Black Dog Tavern, on the Deer Ridge Golf Course in Bellville, filling overnight visitors’ bellies with one last meal “through the bean slot” before they hit the road for home.
