Bee Glue and What It Can Do For Your Health

My neighbor, who is 87 years old, has spent decades of his life as a bee-keeper. He could talk for hours about the importance of bees and the necessity of providing pesticide free areas for their use. Without bees, the quality of our lives would nose dive! Some say Albert Einstein is the author of this quote, others say it is Maurice Maeterlinck from The Life of the Bee:

“If the bee disappeared off the face of the earth, man would only have four years left to live.”

Though the accuracy of this statement is up for debate, the importance of pollination is not! And bees certainly play a big part of that! I must say that I do enjoy the buzzing sounds and activity I see as I look out my window every day.

More Than Pollinators

If you are a home owner, then you know it takes constant routine maintenance and upkeep. Bees know this, too! That is why they make propolis. Propolis, for those word nerds out there, means ‘defense of the city.’ It is similar to glue. The resinous substances bees gather from the leaf buds of trees and certain vegetables are mixed with beeswax and other secretions. This mixture is then used to sterilize the beehive, seal cracks, and build panels. It is also a disinfectant and even used for embalming intruders that are too big to chase out any other way! Better not be trespassing!

It is the propolis that keeps the hive sterile and prevents viruses and bacteria from entering and is why humans took note several hundred years ago. Our ancestors discovered its germicidal properties and effectiveness for wounds, burns, infections, and other health-related issues.

Today, propolis is recognized for its antibiotic and antiseptic properties and is known to have antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects as well. As a cream, it is a wonderful topical treatment for simple wounds, and in liquid form can be used as a gargle or as a remedy for sores and irritations in the mouth and throat. Much research has been conducted on its use as an antioxidant and confirms its value to be extremely high. A few of the other uses include treating:

  • upper respiratory diseases
  • high blood pressure
  • bone diseases
  • allergies
  • specific forms of cancer
  • food poisoning
  • heat stress in athletes
  • parasites
  • endometriosis
  • warts!

Do a search online for ‘propolis and (any of the above-mentioned)’ and you will find plenty of extra information.

“When I stopped in last Friday afternoon, you were so kind as to give me a sample of Propolis. It is amazing! I was to meet friends for dinner that evening and was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to share in the conversation but as it turns out…I was able!
It was still a little weak but so much better in only a couple of hours.
By Saturday evening my voice was fully restored.Thank you!”
