BIRDING, VIRTUALLY & ON THE ROAD Registration required for birding programs this spring

Spots are still left for two great birding programs this spring – one that’s virtual and can be enjoyed from home, the other that will have you traveling out of Geauga County!

Are you up for an incredible birding adventure? Registration is available – and limited – to join a naturalist rain or shine for Birding at Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve in Mentor on Monday, May 3; Tuesday, May 4; or Wednesday, May 5, all 8 to 10 a.m.

“Whether you’re a beginning bird watcher or an avid birder, you do not want to miss the spring spectacle of bird migration along the shores of Lake Erie!” said Chief Naturalist John Kolar. “Even on a ‘slow’’ day, this is truly one of the best birding spots in Northeast Ohio.”

On a good day in May, with winds coming from the south, Headlands Dunes can be almost dripping with a large variety of birds such as warblers, orioles, tanagers and vireos just to name a few, according to Kolar. Participants will meet at Mentor Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve.

Bring your binoculars and camera to capture an award-winning photo, and wear footgear for sandy trails and beach. We will observe social distancing and use of face masks.

Or, stay home on Sunday, April 18, from 2 to 4 p.m., to join noted local birders Matt Valencic and Kelly Kozlowski for a virtual Warbler Warm-Up as they present techniques for ID’ing spring warblers using color patterns, habitat, behaviors and song. This program, a collaboration with the Audubon Society of Greater Cleveland, is designed for novice to intermediate birders, and program hand-outs can be emailed upon request. To receive the Zoom link to join, simply register in advance at www.geaugaparkdistrict.org or by calling 440-286-9516.
